Cold weather modification

Couple of fill ups over winter won't cause any harm to seals and keeping within the 20% max should also prevent detonation

run mine with petrol in it every week to keep the cooking oil nice and thin :)

It should be OK but in extreme low temperatures it may not be as effective, the antifreeze doesnt totally stop frezzing but stops large crystal formation, even with petrol in you will still get crystals and these then block the filters...

my winter mod has been to turn my heated seats from OFF to ON :D

This is my winter cure as well, I do love the heated seats in my 90, makes up for the ****e heaters, well almost....

What modifications can be made to a 200tdi defender to deal with cold weather?

It's due to go to Norway this summer and then the Himalayas to be used as a mobile clinic the following winter.

From searching on here, I've got as far as using the correct oil, dual insulated oddessey batteries (to run the fridges), snow cowel for the heater, AT tires, waffle boards (not sure how much use these are?), snow chains (any good?), snow spade.

Is there anything you can do to the engine to prepare it for that kind of environment? Is there any particular problems I should expect?

I'm taking it to Scotland in a few weeks to try and cut my teeth in the cold weather, but I'm quite new to all this.

I've been a climber and mountaineer for some time so I've got personal kit under control it's more for the poor landy.

D

Much research as possible - you're not the first to take a Landy to the Himalayas ... and good luck

I'd have an electric heated windscreen somewhere on your 'wish llist', and a can of Easy Start! and, obviously, some good winter-suited tyres - why not start a new thread titled 'What tyres can I fit on my Landy?' ;-)

NEVER use 'Easy-Start in a diesel, use carb cleaner instead ... :D ;)

Stupid question but you want me to put petrol in my tank? how does that work?

Mixing Petrol with Diesel is nothing new

The petrol will help keep the fuel nice and thin even in extreme temperatures

for example today - I jump in the Range Rover note it's -7 deg but, the veg oil in my tank is still liquid because it has around 15% petrol in it. Had it of been veg oil alone it would of been nothing more than a huge Veg oil ice cube in the tank and I'd be sat at home now!

Probably a good idea to make sure your alternator has enough grunt to charge your insulated, go-faster batteries when you have maximum electrical load.

What headlining do you have? Have a look at the headlinnings for ffr landies. That'll keep ya snug.
