Hi all having problems starting p38 2.5 d from cold. I have fitted a new set of glow plugs thinking this was the problem, i used NGK's nothing has changed. I have had a tester on the plugs to make sure its not the relay they come on for about 15 sec, so thats fine. Once started it runs fine all day with no problems stop and start. Starts every time, then it gets left over night and the same again the next morning. I have noticed a slight leak from injector 1 when running so i am going to take out 2moro and re seal with new copper washer. I have also noticed air bubbles in the clear fuel pipe that comes out of fuel filter but once it has started these are gone is this normal? Any help would be nice as i go away in it in 3 wk and dont want this problem every morning.

Change the spill pipes the leak is not from the injector it is from the spill pipe. When fuel gets hot it expands, when it cools it contracts, sucking air in from knackered spill pipes.

would this cause it to bubble at bottom of injector when running. the pipes are dry

Is there any fuel in the injector socket where you can see the bubbles. If there is the spill pipe is leaking. The bubbles are the diesel boiling off.

it looks as if its bubbling up from the bottom of injector well. its a black fluid not clean fuel. also it does it as soon a started so the engine is still cold

how did you fix it? im thinking about getting it plugged in to see if any fault codes show up, hopefully they will and it will make fixing easier.

I bought a bad 2.5 last year, injector 1 was sitting in a mixture of oil and diesel and was bubbling where it meets the head, turns out the head was cracked.

You will not get any unburned fuel leaking back past injector seal. Combustion gas yes, liquid diesel never. The only place unburned diesel can come from into injector base is from spill pipes or the injector body itself. Is that what you were told or was the head proved cracked. Where were the cracks, in the precombustion chamber? Someone may have pulled your leg.

No fault code for leaking injector or air in fuel my friend. It is common to get slight leakage from injector seal after time. It is of little consiquence. Normally you can't see it unless you get fuel leaking into injector well. Pour some liquid into all six, bet you get bubbles on most of them.

I know it's an unusual place for a head to go and I've never heard of any going the same way but mine certainly did,the only person who pulled my leg was the regrettable weasel that I purchased it from,I sold it to a friend who bought another head before taking the old one off and another friend of mine fitted the recon head so I'll give him a ring tomorrow and ask about the cracks if interest/doubt still remains ))

If you had no overheat, no oil in water, no water in oil it is unlikely the head was cracked. As i say it is normal to get a slight leak from injector seal after the engine has done a few miles as the copper seal age hardens. That is not indicative of a cracked head. The oil/fuel in the injector well will have leaked from spill pipe in all probability.

I was losing a little oil and coolant as well as the cooling system pressurising,it was difficult to start at all times, the bubbling at the base of the injector got worse as did the pressure in the system so I decided to take it off the road.

I have the exact same - put down to lazy plugs as 3 heats and it starts.. or weirdly just leaving the ignition on until the radio actually comes on, seems to be enough time for them to heat up properly. Haven't got around to changing them yet..

Hi all a quick update think problem solved, i sorted the injector with new copper washer and changer the spill pipes. Before i did this i was getting air bubbles in the clear pipe from fuel filter to injectore now i checked for last 2 days in the morning after being stood all night no bubbles, go to start and fires as normal so we think spill pipes but maybe injector but either way problem sorted. I would just like to say thank you for assistance.:)

Spill pipes to blame. Glad you sorted it.:):):)
