Hi My P38 was difficult to hot start when I had it (5 years ago) so I fitted the timed hot start kit. Last year I had some problems starting when it had been stood for a while so changed the leak offs to silicon ones and added a non return valve and all was well. I also changed the glow plugs. Last week it began to get difficult to start in the morning but once started it was fine all day. Now it won't start at all. It seems to fire but not quite catch. The local garage started it with jump leads and carb cleaner. They had a look and say the FIP top gasket is leaking and have ordered the seal for it. Is this likely to be the problem or is it more likely to need a replacement FIP or at least retiming as it's now done 180,000 miles.

At that mileage the injection pump maybe tired and more so the injectors if they have never been serviced. Seals do fail, if one has gone the others will follow. Far more likely to be glow plugs failed than anything else. Take the silicone off the spills and replace with proper spill pipe. Silicone is no good as fuel pipe.

Thanks Wammers. I should have some time on Wednesday so will check and change the glow plugs as required and change the spill offs. The top seal of the FIP is definately leaking (a drip every 30 secs or so at idle), is it worth changing or do you think it's not worth the effort and get a replacement pump :(

Top seal is quite easy to change so worth a go. Middle seal gets a little more involved and you need to know what you are doing to change that. Change the seal and look at the glow plugs see what you get. Refurbished pumps are around the £600.00 mark. You would need special tools to fit one. S/H are a gamble.

The glow plugs I put in last year were NGK and 4 out of 6 had gone. I have now changed them to BOSCH and all is back well again. Leak offs changed to proper stuff and top seal of the FIP changed. Thanks Wammers / Datatek.

That gives me a warm feeling. :):)

Hi jeffers, did you manage to get the top seal for the fip no problem and was it easy enough to change out, cheers

No great problem though it didn't seem too bad. It could be the next seal down but didn't touch that as it seems like a more difficult job. Cleaned round the top with carb cleaner undid the 4 bolts (3 torx and 1 security bolt), removed top, hooked seal out with a pin. Then back together.
