My D90 TD5 2001 puffs up white smoke on cold startup and a whole of black smoke when driving slowly and at high speeds - it doesnt stop. Could use some assistance.

My mechanic says the injectors should be replaced/cleaned and the diesel pump serviced.

any other tips?

Thanks.

hi, it could be injectors but have you checked the inter cooler hoses are not collapsing ? check this first, check to see if vacume pipes are all on and in place and that air filter is clean.

If the intercooler hose collapses .. then you will also experience a lack of power. I believe the MAS flow sensor could be the problem. See if you can borrow on from a fellow and test it. It takes a minute to replace ..

The white smoke .. That's a bit more tricky. White smoke should not be related to the fuel line. Is this every time you start? Do you need to top-up coolant fluid frequently?

@Hallbeckengineering, many thanks for the tip, Ill do exactly that this weekend.

@Buckhandle thanks! Im having a constant smoke problem. White smoke on start up everytime I start the car. On the other hand, you are absolutely right, I do top up the coolant level every now and then yes.

The other thing I notice is that when the car is low on diesel, or when the AC is on, the smoke doubles... That, coupled with a very loud engine rattle like a harsh piston rattle at low rpm, when the car speeds up all goes back to nomal and you hear the turbo breathing... All pullies and belts are brand new though... any thoughts there?

Forgot to mention that the dielsel consumption on the D90 in its current condition is rediculous, I barely make 390Kms with a full tank! there must be something wrong... Also any help on that matter would be high appreciated.

I think we covered the black smoke part.

I'm a bit more concerned about the white smoke. The white smoke could be related to rough starting issues e.g if the glow plugs are dead. The smoke could probably be white ..
Is it hard to start? If so .. it could be your heater plugs which are dead. Pull them out and test with your battery. If they glow .. they are ok. If not .. replace.

If the heater plugs are ok .. you may have a blown head gasket..

@Buckhandle thanks alot, I will do that... does the head gasket produce a rattling sound at low rev (a bit above idle)?

Is the rattle also present a few min after start up?... or only during the first minute or so? ... and is hard to start?
I doubt a head gasket would cause a rattle. If the head gasket .. the white smoke is caused by coolant being pushed into the combustion area. Hereby the coolant evaporates during start up.

But calm down ) look at things one by one and don't be concerned in advance.

I guess I have a long weekend ahead of me, but thanks again, I will let you know how it goes.

@Buckhandle

the rattling is always there and quite heavy, you hear it on start up and on low revs all the time, its only vanishes at high revs/speeds. The car is somehow hard to start yes.

thanks for the tips, I guess I have a long weekend ahead of me!
