Anyone tried compressing the coil springs using a pair of ratchet straps?

Trying to save cash by not having to buy tools I will most likely only use once.

Thanks

The answer is DON'T!! it's only safe to use a proper spring compressor. If you try some other item, there is a real chance that you could cause serious injury to you are someone else. I've see what happens when it all goes wrong, it isn't pleasant!!

Buy the correct tools, sell them on when you are finished ;)

+1

£30 From machine mart.

I was using two (cos I couldn't be arsed puttingthe third one on) to change a spring on the disco. One of them slipped round under compression and the spring belted me on the top of the foot (I was sat cross legged) - it felt like a horse han stamped on it (had that before…).
Either way, the spring was banana shaped, still under compression.
I dread to think what it'd have done to my gonads or face if it had gone t'other way.

Spend £30… ;)

don't even try ffs it will end in tears, its not even 100% safe with the proper tools, I had a proper clamp let go on me once and the spring hit me on the forehead and split my head open, even then I felt lucky people have been known to get killed

That's another good thing about e-bay - you can buy tools you only need once in the knowledge that you can pretty much get back what you paid for them. I actually made a £10 profit on a hydrolastic suspension pump when rebuilding my MGF.

But as everyone else has said, don't try with ratchet straps, if they let go (especially in a confined space like a wheel arch) what might happen is anyone's guess.

1st post was 5 days ago and no development... I guess he did go with the ratchet straps and by now has his fingers trapped between a coil and a wheel arch
