03 td5 Disco Auto - When driving along and i let off the throttle my revs die back to tick over and i get no engine braking at all. I am sure it did not do this before and I know it sounds mad but i can not remember if it did or not.

What does everyone elses autos do on over run? Do they all drop to tick over or do you get some engine braking?

Ta

My 2001 Auto TD5 gives little or no engine braking until engine is up to running temp
When did you last change gearbox oil? Always makes a differenmce also the often forgotten filter and just to get a feel for the condition as burnt ATF II is not pleasant.
Does it change up OK and if so when does it lock up the Torque converter? , mine usually locks up at 50-53 mph cold or hot.
If you are not getting these indications then some of the solenoids on the brake clutches control side( I think there are 3 brake clutches, 2001 anyway) may need looking at.
I'm sure some of the Seniors with more electronic knowledge than me will be along soon although Bank holiday WE means only 1 thing- B##R.

Be happy, if no engine braking ,no wasting fuel ,so big MPG figures.

Hi,

It does lock up around 50 into top, its only slowing it goes into coast mode. If I lock it down a gear I get some engine braking but then it drops off and coasts at idle again. Changes fine going up but sometime there is a slight stutter or blip. Could this be an oil and filter job? Is it easy to do? How?

My long term plan is to remap, egr gone etc, will the extra torque help the auto box?

Thanks

You can never go wrong with an oil change if you are unsure when it was last done- this is a piece of cake just remember to follow filling procedure when done and I found that it only takes 4.5 -5 litres to refill and not 9.7 as stated in the workshop manual , this figure is if you refill the torque converter from dry.
However the Auto gearbox filter will require removing the Sump to get at
But reading your symptoms it seems it is changing up normally but then no engine braking, which could be control / solenoid problems.
I'd be tempted to change the oil ,refill and see if that has made any difference first.

Good luck

hi ,with the auto it will not provide any engine braking and will always drop to idle at low speeds but when you get to just over 50mph and the auto box has locked the torque converter off so you get a 1 to 1 drive it will then give engine braking untill you get back to 50mph then it comes back out of lockout.Or if you use the gear selection eg 3 2 1 on the gear selector it will then provide engine braking.

Yes
I agree with Scotty I didnt really notice until today as I usually just stick it in D and point , but there is much more engine braking in 123,
To return to an earlier point you mentioned--- get rid of the EGR and clean up the airflow sensor ( 2 x 8mm bolts to remove and spray electrical contact cleaner liberally) I have noticed a big improvement in responsiveness but I still need to remove the intake manifold and get rid of the marmite completely I also hate to say it but mpg is up to 25mpg around the doors but as the removal of the EGR coincided with a full service I cant say that is the improvement --probably just a combination.
But get rid of the EGR ---load s of threads on here how to do it
