Hi Folks,

So, we've added a manual D1 to the "fleet" (!), for SWMBO. As we expected, the clutch is too heavy for her ( health issues ), and a servo should provide an instant fix, whilst we collect the bits required to convert to auto.

there are loads out there, on flea bay etc, with varying ratios from 1.9:1 to 4.3:1...

Anyone know the ratio of the "RedBooster" one ? ( tried emailing them, but no reply ), or have experience of a third party remote servo, and recommend a ratio to us please?

TIA

Had a search, and the ratio is the only thing that I can't find!!

I've got a Red Rooster servo in my Defender 110 200tdi, and it's fantastic.

When the engine is running (obviously) I can depress the clutch pedal with one finger. It's lighter than a Japanese hatchback.

I don't know the ratio however - sorry.

@Falcone - thanks for the reply. Glad it works for you :)

Could i trouble you to tell me the approximate size of the vacuum tank that goes with the redbooster system please? Thanks.

I found this thread on difflock.com :-

http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?t=52395&sid=731f953ed68cab38df960c7de03954a4

The guy has used an MGB remote (brake) servo with a 1.9:1 ratio - no vac tank, just tee'd into the line from the pump.

Given that more assistance will use a greater quantity of vacuum, I reckon I am going to fit a 2.3:1, and see what happens ....

Any opinions out there?

Disco, you've got my ears pricked up. What are these ratios of? Cylinder diameters or overall leverage?

I ask because I've got to use a cable clutch for simplicity on my build, and one of the many little things to ponder is heaviness of clutch and, obviously, getting full disengagement.

I'm all ears too! Got a very poorly left knee, converted my 1986 110 to the later pedal assembly which helped a bit but it's not enough with my knee getting slowly worse.
Too poor for a red rooster set up.
I'm sure someone somewhere has used bits off something else that does the same but diy?
Shout up if you know owt!

What are these ratios of?

Ah! this is one of my questions - I reckon its the amount of assistance you get - and if I am right, then, for example a 2:1 would mean the pedal effort is halved, and 4:1 would mean pedal effort is quartered.... Even the Wikipedia article is poor - it even admits this in the article:-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_servo

I have ordered the 2.3:1 servo, and will install it ASAP - SWMBO has enough health issues without anything adding to the mix.

I will report back - but if anyone else has any input, then lets have have it !!

Aye, the redbooster setup is too expensive - the servo I have ordered is £90 - of course there will be a few bits of pipe and such, but did you see the pics in the thread I linked to above (on difflock ) - looks a reasonably simple install in a 90, so should be the same in a 110, and a complete breeze in a D1... here's hoping anyway!!

+1 !!!

Yes, I saw the pics but after I posted! I just got all excited and started typing before I clicked the link!
The brake pipes etc hold no fear for me it's just which correct servo to purchase, I can't afford to chuck money away experimenting if you see what I mean?
Good luck!

Found another relevant thread@-

There's a guy in there used the same as I have ordered, from the same supplier too!!

Agreed about the experimenting - LR are expensive enough without splashing cash about.

Are you coming to the meet up?

We are planning to try - BUT, living in a **** caravan in our garden, four YEARS into a ten week "repair" to our home puts some unpredictable pressure on our time, so.... well, you get the idea...

Why ??
