Hi all,
1.8 FL, clutch is fine. No noise, slipping etc, but the pedal is quite heavy, and it can be quite embarrasing selecting reverse!!
I seem to remember by MGZS had a similar problem with reverse (except it would also jump out, if you were'nt firm with it)
Is this normal, as HWMBO is threatening to burn it if i dont sort it...:D

Hi Russ,

When I was buying my FL recently, I spent a morning looking around several with a dealer, who only dealt 4x4s - and the bulk of his stock was Freelanders.

He mentioned that the clutch hydraulics are a relatively common failure. Apparently, it's not a big problem and the parts can be had for around £40.

If I understand correctly. the hydraulics come as a set; with the reservoir and slave cylinder already connected.

May not be the problem, but for the money, it may be worth a go.

Cheers,

Ian.

Hi Japp, the hydraulics wont be the prob as they either work or dont i.e pedal moves up and down or just sits on the floor.Last week i changed the clutch in mine because it was tight and it was the clutch release arm!it was almost solid to move by hand so once i had the gearbox out i removed the arm and cleaned it up and it was turning with its own weight then,i still changed the clutch as i had bought one off ebay for £58 and now the clutch is spot on and really light!im sure this is your prob but the only way to sort is to remove the box :( i did mine on driveway, you can from underneath disconnect the clutch cylinder from bracket in seconds and try to move the release arm with grips to see how tight it is,my box had loads of lining dust inside which im sure hepled towards the seizing of the arm!!if you need any info please ask me,glen

I had this on my Hippo - it was the arm that siezed - although I didn't really notice it until the clutch burnt out and took the flywheel with it. Two weeks on a ramp at the main dealer (waiting for a new flywheel) and a grand later....

thats the arm that im on about,i tried to clean mine like that but unfortunatly the seizeing and tightness it where it goes through the box not on the edge so once the gearbox is removed there is a small bolt that holds the release bearing fork onto this arm to undo then you have to keep trying to work it out of the box, once out sand down lightly and clean lube the hole it slides into, easy job but has to be gearbox out im afraid and like i said might aswell put another clutch in if youve gone that far.

Thanks for your replies...will have a look at weekend. Not a big problem, but needs to be sorted, or things'll be hottin up!!

On a clutch related topic; my Freelander has very little travel from dipped to engaged - which is very near the carpet. The pressure required to use the clutch is still slight enough but there is an occasional 'notchy' feel when changing from first to second..

..My first thought is a new slave cylinder...any other ideas?
