I've recently noticed that upon starting (Disco in neutral) a "whirring" sound seem's to be coming from the clutch/gearbox area, but once clutch pedal is depressed sound goes away.

Incidentally this has only come about after the handbrake shoe's were changed recently, (Gearbox/transfer box new last year, clutch changed in past couple of years.)

It only happens now and again so I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to a cause/remedy so I can get it sorted before it get's any worse.

Thanks in advance;)

Sounds like the thrust bearing is on it's way out same thing happened to me a few months back.

Cheers for that;), having checked out other threads once I read your reply, I think you're most probably right ... not a job I'd be comfortable doing though, so I'll have a word with my local LR Indy on Monday about it.

Check the oil levels of the gear/transfer boxes as well. Another point is the pilot bearing can make some strange noises until it changes position with the primary shaft on the gearbox.

Thanks Dave, I'll get the oil levels checked straight away (It is almost 12 months since they were fitted). If it was the pilot bearing, would this be anything I should worry about?

No they can make a noise for a few seconds normaly pulling away when cold, a few gearchanges later and it will be quiet for untill the next cold start or even be quiet for a few days weeks, either way not an issue.

Savvy garages fit a new one when fitting the clutch, what many do not do is soak the bush/bearing in warm clean engine oil. Some can be had with a roller bearing race (like a prop bearingin a uj) and some are phosphor bronze which need a good oil soaking.

The cost of parts compared to the labour of a clutch is cheap.
If you are thinking about getting any of these parts 'Inspected' just get them replaced, and do the lot, all of it, as getting to a disco clutch is the work, not replacing the parts!

Good point and while in there get a thrust bearing that is mounted on a metal carrier and not a plastic one, also get the reinforced clutch fork as well, for the extra couple of quid it is well worth it.

Thanks for the excellent advice guy's (and link):), I'm going to put off some other "jobs" on the Disco so that I can sort out the clutch asap. Just awaiting an email back from Rakeway before I get the other parts.
