Clutch Pedal

Hello Been looking at ways to make my clutch pedal lighter so my wife can drive, she says its far to heavy at the moment, which it is.
Anyway seen lots of advice on changing the pedal and spring.
My 90 is a G Reg 1990. and has the old pedal on.
Does anyone know if I could replace it with one of these and fit new spring ect??Land Rover Defender Td5 clutch Master Cylinder Servo & pedal assembly | eBay
I,d be very interested in seeing if this makes a difference to the resistance of the pedal. If you could keep us informed please
 
The TD5 clutch is hella heavy... I don't think replacing yours with it will help. If you go that route look at the TD5 clutch pedal mod. Couple bushings and a spring for about £26.

I'd recommend getting the "red booster" clutch assist. Essentially, a vacuum booster for the clutch. Spendy, but you can push the clutch pedal in with a finger.

Do you mind me asking what the TD5 modification consists of and what are the benefits results please?
 
Start with the 300-tdi or td5-type clutch pedal. It's relatively cheap and will help immensely. I used to feel a pain in my groin whenever I drove my 300tdi 90 for more than half an hour (or if traffic was heavy). I replaced the pedal and I never felt the pain again. Change the slave cylinder for the V8-type and it would be even lighter. A mate of mine went the whole hog and fitted the red booster clutch assist on his TD5. The clutch pedal is now lighter than the accelerator! It cost a packet though and there was an additional hidden cost. The darn thing is made in Bangladesh, hence outside the EU and import duty had to be paid over and above.

Their website says there is a distributor in Scotland, so will probably take longer to get to you than if it was in Bangladesh :p

Still £375 though

it's only a spring

if you can't retrofit (i really thought you could), then pick up a second hand 300 one with it already one. might need to repalce the master cylinder though.

afaik all pedals can be swapped
 
The later pedal & spring assembly (TD5 & Puma) is part number SKB500280 and available as a genuine part for only £40, don't worry about sourcing secondhand ones at that price. The earlier master cylinder fits straight in and the whole job is very quick & easy to do.
Did mine last year, not because I needed a lighter clutch but just because a new pedal assembly saved me having to refurbish my old one and if there was a benefit of fitting the later unit then that would be a bonus.

Looking at the one in your link I see that it is the later pedal but appears to be fitted with the early spring so I can't see that you would gain any benefit whatsoever.

Am I being stupid by asking if you can buy another spring the same length but just less stiff as I was hoping to get a softer pedal but not spend a fortune?
 
My brothers went bandy on his old 200tdi, I had a spare in the shed but was td5.
Deffinitely made a difference, Oh and it didn't squeak any more :lol:

This lot make a servo kit.

Personally I would make my own if I was going to go down this route, but I'd need to find a small vac assist servo to do it first, after that it's just the case of connecting the bits and making up a new clutch pipe or using a flexi to connect to the existing pipe.
