Help needed I have a 1992 defender 110 with a 300tdi, r380 gearbox.
I recently changed my slave cylinder as the old on leaked and was not serviceable, then it started jumping out of gear, but would then go back in after switching off and restarting. Then the clutch went so I changed the clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, clutch fork, retaining staple. Put it all back together and now I get no drive, the clutch pedal feels hard and depresses and Will go in gear but when the pedal is released there is no trust the vehicle will not move. I took gearbox off again and the retaining spring had disconnected from the release bearing so refitted and put back together. But still no thrust could it be the gearbox has gone. How can I test to diagnose.

Is the transfer box in gear? Crawl underneathe and get someone to operate the clutch see if the props turn, that'll tell you if the box is ok.
If the plate was the wrong way round then you wouldn't get gears with engine running.

Yes pretty sure I have fitted the friction plate the right way round, the flat side went up against the flywheel with the side that bulges out facing towards the gearbox. There was nothing written on the friction plate but the one that I took off had flywheel side written on it so I used this as a guide. I haven't tried to see it the props turn yet while the clutch is depressed as its lashing it down with rain here in Yorkshire and has been for days. :( Bit will take a look when it stops. If it stops!

We'll rain has stopped so have been out and tried to see if the props are turning, when clutch depressed and they are not so I tried to see if it would work in high and low range and it will move forward and backwards but only with high range selected. What does this mean?

transfer box selector mechanism faulty:)

Thanks landowner for your reply if it's the transferbox selector mechanism is this something I can tinker with to fix, I am New to this whole broken down land rover thing so what am I looking for do you mean the linkage on the outside of the box or is it a internal part? Could I have knocked or bent something getting gearbox/transfer box in and out? I did have a struggle with just a bottle Jack a trolley jack and a scaffolding bar above to hold the weight.
