I have a Freelander 1.8L Xi April 2001 with vin that ends YA516674 and I noticed a problem with the clutch being spongy and not returning - looked like someone had taken the clutch master cylinder top off and not replaced it very well when it last went to the garage...

Anyway thought it best to replace but that there are 2/3 types of master cylinder and 2001 is a changeover year. They quote them as a sealed unit but I could remove the top off the master cylinder no problems. Which one do I have?

My vin would suggest the second one but the date does not...

 Hi Just fitted a new 1 piece master and slave and now no gear's will select, would it be the bearing or the arm that has seized. I have oiled the arm but little movement , should the arm go right in ?. when this first came obvious it was the slave I got the car back by selecting reverse and engine started to get it home that was only yards from my house, so I was in gear at one stage, from that gear stick will go into all gates but no gear and clutch? any ideas please?.
