Hi

I have searched the net, and am fairly familiar with clutch judder on the land rover from a previous vehicle, but still feel i need your opinions please.

Had my 95 defender 90 a few months now. And in that time havent exerienced any clutch judder untill this week. Taking up drive has been faultless.

The past week, the land rover is juddering quite badly, only when its cold. 10 miles would rectify it and the clutch would feel perfect with no issues. There is a little bit of oil seeping out the bell housing, but nothing drastic, a small spot on the drive over night.

Could the clutch be getting contaminated by this small amount of oil? Or could there be anything else causing it?

Im currently using 10w/40 semi synthetic oil, which is only a cheap euro car parts own brand, and it appears very thin when pouring. I woundered if it was too thin, and i require a better 15w/40? Would it prevent some of the leaks occurring from the engine? And as a result save my clutch?

Many thanks guys!

i think its possible the fault is with your dual mass flywheel , mine does the same when cold ( 2004 TD5 defender )
my mates bmw is the same when cold as do 2 more vehicles with this setup which has done over 100.000 miles

I think at 95 the 300Tdi was still the engine in a 90.

Next time when engine is cold try setting off in 2nd or 3rd gear keeping the revs at about 2000, if the clutch has oil contamination this will help clear it briefly, if the clutch if OK after this then it is oil contamination.

mine is exactly the same.. judders for first 20 mins of driving,, if i use slightly more rev's when pulling away its fine,, oil on flywheel,, pain in the arse, but i cant be asked to strip it down , will wait till new clutch is needed ..

another thought ,, maybe as its synthetic oil and slightly thinner it may be that it is passing past the oil seal.. and changing to a mineral oil could reduce the leak.. possably,,, just a thought

I wondered if it was the type of oil too! And if a mineral 15w/40 would help?

And james martin, is it unlikely its from engine oil then? As its the tiniest drip out of the bell housing
