I was driving the series recently and while pulling into the driveway in 1st gear noticed the clutch was juddering, this happened twice. but since then it has been super smooth again (I have been driving it regularly for a few days since then and have had no problems at all. not even the slightest hint of judder)

is there any possible explanation? its still smooth right now. but I remembered and started worrying

Could be summat loose, engine/'box mountings, prop shaft uj bolts, or could be oil on clutch from leaky oil seal, or possibly a britpart clutch, judder somes as standard.

Or just a bit of wheelslip - was it icy at the time?
no wasn't icy, but its a possibility, as I had a larger than normal load on board. and I was on grass.

clutch has been fine before and after the incident. im probably just going to leave it be. its just that all new rattles and bumps make me paranoid LOL :D

Sell the land rover or buy vallium - the rattles and squeaks will just keep coming. Mind you, even if something serious breaks it'll probably still get you home.

ps. just noticed your location - ice would be a little unlikely. Perhaps you ran over a hobbit?

Had exactly same problem on mine...

...Hope your sitting down. Turns out it was rear main crank seal. When I was using car alot the oil that leaked (very slightly) from knackered seal was enough to make clutch slip but after a couple of hill starts, slipped clutch take off problem when away.... After a few of them slipping went away.

...That is until I stopped using it for a week or 2 then it was back, with a vengence. I tried everything props g'box but endned up been rear main seal. Unfortunatly only real way to check is split gbox and engine and see it there is STICKY oil ming pasted on sides of bell housing (asuming you've not been fording it with plug out...)

Anyway, change clutch while you are there, as its probably comtaminated.

Not a difficult job to do, just a MFer with cold hands (getting spring on seal to go togeather)

PS I left mine for ages and killed the diff... as banging REALLY stressed transmission.

Also if you do it, be careful of slave cylinder bolts, my mamory tells me they are different - UNC and I stripped the casing trying to put a UNF in there (as all other effing bolts on this job are unF!!!!!!!!!!) Might be talking crap about that but there was something funky about them!!!!!!

don't think this is the issue, it hasn't been slipping at all.

If the crankcase seal has gone I'd expect to see oil dripping out of the bellhousing drain hole. If you take the centre cover off (the bit the gear levers stick out of) there's an inspection plate in the bellhousing - you could check for any oil contamination through there 'cos it should have been thrown around a bit inside.
