can any one tell me how easy it is to replace the clutch and bearing and fork in a disco 300tdi....and is it a job a novice can do..........ps or is there anyone who knows where i can get it done for less then the 500 in humberside area

engine crane and take the engine out-trust me on this I have just rebuilt a gearbox and replaced the seals and gaskets on a transfer box-heavy as.

a decent garage should be able to do it in a 5-6 hours

Same prob I've got, (just hoping it can last a bit longer), my local indy reckoned on the Disco being in there garage at least 5 hrs, as they need to drop the gearbox/transfer box and fit a new clutch kit (Heavy Duty preferably).... I think the look my wife gave him and the way my face turned extremely pale stopped him giving me a price:eek: at the time!

get an engine crane, remove the center consol and drop a strap throught the hole in the tunnel round the gear box and lift to take the weight. remove all the bolts, prop shafts ect then pull the box back once it starts comming away from the engine lower the crane a little untill you can slip the box out then lower it to the floor.

replace clutch ect lift the box and slip it back in ! if you have used a clutch aligning tool it should slot straight in. bolt back up ect job done ! its awkward and can be a right pain but it aint hard to do.

I still suggest you remove the engine, reason being the box with transfer box on does not balance well together- you will have problems refitting without a transmission jack and cradle.
The engine crane method you have little risk of it slipping and if it plays up you can stop for a tea break.

put mine back today:doh:

i have used both methods to get to the clutch and i'm not sure which is easier!
removing the engine takes a long time to get the bolts out from the top of the bell housing and is a pain to remove all the hoses an pull the engine forward

but removing the gear box is a pain to remove the centre consol and cross member but is easier to get to the top bell housing bolts,

removing the gear and tranny box together did make it easier to mate the engine and box back together if you bolt a lifting eye to the stud on the top of the rear of the tranny box the box lies dead straight and can be easily mated back together.

it's not a hard job to do just a pain in the arse!

hope that made sence to you:rolleyes:
