Clutch at 154,000 miles

My 2005 TD5 90 is still on the original clutch at 154,000 miles but for the last few weeks when cold is making a bit of a noise when cold (sounds like a cow mooing… when the pedal is depressed). She drives fine and their are no other problems but would anyone suggest a pre-emptive clutch replacement at this mileage or just keep going until it slips / fails?

Yes - all my own miles... just thinking same discs as well... 4 or 5 sets of tyres though

thats pretty good yer big jessee......

if that was mine i would drive it till its nearly dead by slipping a bit then replace the whole lot,i would expect a new transfer box and also check the splines on the input and out put shafts of the main box....but as your the only owner you should know just how buggered it is.

how much play in the wagon when you rock it with the handbrake on?

It sounds like the release bearing. Same happened on mine at 130k miles so did it when I did clutch/flywheel etc..

Not much - had two front halfshafts replaced about 20k ago - bit of rocking but all sound generally

go for the refit then......you will have to keep it forever now lol..

A 2005 vehicle should have had the cross-drilled input gear from new, so assuming the transfer box oil has been looked after (ie. changed at the relevant interval and not being contaminated with water or the like) this problem is unlikely to occur.

154,000 miles is good going for the clutch but I wouldn't change it for the sake of it! The cow noise might just be the clutch pedal pivot in the pedal box if it's not the release bearing. You might be able to hear the general location the sound is coming from?

at a guess i would say a transferbox is end of life at 120k so he has done well imo.

Thanks - I will check that out. Service intervals have been as per the book but I do change the engine oil and rotary filter every 6000 in-between the main service intervals - for the sake of £40 its been worth it
