I've tried searching, but either my search-fu is weak, or I have a rare problem...

My clutch pedal went most of the way down, but then wouldn't go any further. I couldn't select any gears. Gave the pedal a kick and now it's going right to the floor with no pressure behind it. When it gave the last few inches, it felt mechanical iyswim.

There is no fluid leaking, so I'm pretty sure it's neither master, slave or pipe. I'm pretty sure that it's something in the bellhousing - probably the actuator rod to the clutch fork.

So, before I start taking stuff apart, is that likely? Is it something I might be able to fix through the small hole if I take the slave cylinder off? And why is it likely to have happened?

It's a TD5 if that makes a difference.

Hi

Have you removed the "wading" plug from the bottom of the bell housing.
Have you checked the fluid level?

Could be the slave cylinder. As that is how mine went on the 300tdi.

Cheers

Wading plug is out - and has been for months. Fluid level hasn't dropped.

I meant to add, the clutch is engaged - I drove it home using the magic of clutchless gearchanges and rev matching, I'd like to think my wife was secretly impressed with my calmness and ability, but I think she's just fed up of me playing with a big toy and would prefer me to buy a 'proper' car.

I also meant to add, it's in the process of being assessed for being written off due to accident damage. I'm worried that without a working clutch, it'll be valued as scrap...

Not sure why that would affect the repair quote, you are not expecting the insurers to pay for a new clutch are you?

It may be beneficial if you get a good pay out to accept it unless you want to mess around fixing the problem.

Cheers
