G'day, a couple of days ago I noticed a new nose developing which is currently foxing me hopefully someone can recommend somewhere to look.

My truck starts and runs just fine, goes through all gears, kick down works, bit sluggish when cold, but otherwise is tip top. However Just recently if I idle for a bit after parking up and then kill the engine I am presented with what sounds like metal grinding while coming to an abrupt halt.

I have tried stopping in various gears including neutral with no joy. It sounds like it is coming from the engine bay and I don't have to move for it to happen. If I start it up, wait a few seconds then kill the engine, it grinds. If I start it, give it some gas (~3.5k), let it return to idle then kill the engine nothing.

I've checked the dipstick and engine oil is in-between both markers. But I'm paranoid that the engine is ingesting itself.
The gearbox oil was checked and topped up during the MoT.
It is going in for oil, fluids and filters Thursday (13th), so would it be worth waiting until then to see if that helps before I start digging around?

So yes, some advice would be most appreciated.

For reference: 1999, derv, auto, ~178k miles.

Try looking at the fan they can make strange noises before they come to an end take it off for a moment if you know how and belt and check all pulleys including water pumpand alternator for smoothness and play

i dont know what yours sounds like, but for what its worth- mine made a funny noice/clunking when turning off the engine, and it turned out to be the exhaust hitting the cross member

soloution- on a ramp -trannsmission jack on exhaust and lowering the ramp a bit to just bend the exhaust a little bit, and hey presto

Mine made a funny noise as well each time I turned the engine off and the culprit was the water pump... (like defender300td1 suggested)

Water Pump isn't the news I was hoping for.

I've had a stab at the fan and it has absolutely no play in it and makes no noises that scream "here's your sign" however I have noticed a lot of oil around the turbo, so that'll need cleaning off to see if it is my turbo letting go.

But I would assume if it was the turbo, I'd hear it more regularly than just shutting down, plus expect to see some smoke which there is none of, even when using the sport button. I'd also expect to suffer some power loss, when recently she has been pulling better than she ever has.

Not so far, but my apprentice got bored after turning it off for me once so not been able to pinpoint anything. I think it is on the drivers side.

He/she is an apprentice, get the fecker to sit there and do it as many times as necessary for you to find the fault......

Modern apprentices these days - I don't know, in my day (hark at me at 34) the apprentice did what they were fecking told and if that meant standing on their fecking heads with their thumb up their ar$e, thats what they fecking did....

Tell 'em not to be afecking baby and do as they are told, and if that means turning an ignition key on and off, then thats what they should fecking do......!!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrr:D:D:D

It was probably my fault for catching her on the way into the house after work and demanded she turned the engine off for me. I can't provide the exact quote when I asked her to do it again as it is not for family viewing, but it was along the lines of "One is afraid one cannot do that for the kind gentleman. One would much rather have a shower and perhaps feast on a banquet."

Might need to consider renting a small child.

Tell her to have a joyous evening, hope the banquet is full of lifes finest, eat hearty, be merry, rub up against whatever she classes as a boyfriend (or even girlfriend!!) - cos in the morning she's gonna work harder than a fecking whor3 at Christmas for being a mouthy cow..... :D:D:D

Sorry geez selfish cow, my girl always eager to help seeing as its her car well I let her drive it .

Thought I'd update this as there is nothing worse than a thread left hanging.

The plan was to hire a small Vietnamese child on Sunday to help locate where the noise was coming from as I had to drive down to Leconfield on Saturday. On Friday getting home from work I had to fill up, so two shut downs, both had the grinding noise. Saturday, I had to pick up a guy from the team, he was about 15 miles down the road, grinding noise as I shut down the engine. I then drove to Leconfield, as we was early, we decided to park in a housing estate across from the base as parking at the main gates for 30 minutes is a quick way to get arrested. Shut down, no noise.

Saw the rest of the team arriving so I joined the end of their convoy, we parked up, no noise. I then drove to the main gate, shut down to check in, no noise. Drove across base, parked up, no noise. Finished the event, came back up north, dropped off the guy from my team, shut down to unload his gear, no noise. Drove home, parked up, no noise.

This morning after driving to work, parked, no noise.

It would appear whatever it was that was grinding has worked loose and escaped after a slightly harder drive than normal. Or it has moved slightly and it'll come back soon taking out the engine.
