hi all,

I have just test driven a 1984 series3 petrol. Everything seemed fine with the exception of a clunking noise which only happened when reversing the vehicle out of the garage. It was fine going forward. It's just passed it's MOT but has a drive shaft universal joint advisory. Is it likely that this is what's causing the clunking noise?

Hope u can help

Cheers guys,

Out of interest, how big a job and expense would the reverse idler gear be to fix? Would use this info as part of any offer I make if I decided to purchase the vehicle.

Cheers for the quick responses guys. Will all
Help with my negotiations. Seller wants £7250. It's a 84 petrol truck cab with a 3/4 canvas. Engine runs sweet as a nut and the panels and chassis are very good.

Seven grand for a series 3 is top money. You want a minter with a cast iron warranty. Even then it will cost to keep it mint. They dont look after themselves and always need a few quid spending on them.
The other problem if your not doing much resto work is things will inevitably take you by surprise. I see things weekly when tinkering so I can see the problems before they arise and plan a little.

Hi all, appreciate the responses. No it does not have a galvanised chassis. Original matching numbers one with a new rear cross member and two small patches. Nice original paint with nice patina but does need footwells sorting both sides. 101000 miles on original engine. I too thinks it's high in its price.

Sounds a bit on the heavy side if it has rot. If the foot wells have had it the bulkhead won't be far behind.
Should be about 4 grand tops. I wouldn't pay more than 3.

Cheers bobsticle, much appreciated. Is there a clever way of checking the bulkhead area behind the dash or is the only way to remove the dash completely?

The trouble lies in the box sections round the door pillars so not easy to spot. they rot from the inside out. Things to look for are uneven surface and signs of filling round the pillars and vents.
