Hiya Mik, I'm guessing that as it's a '92, it'll have a manual gearbox??

The most common problem here is the balljoint on the "A" frame at the rear, on the back suspension.

They wear over a period and then what happens is that as you take up drive in first gear the assy moves slightly and gives, usually, one 'knock'.

If this sounds like your problem then the solution is a replacement Balljoint, available from, amonst others, these people:
TRE76RS Heavy Duty Adjustable A Frame Ball Joint

or

ANR1799 A Frame ball joint (WEB EXCLUSIVE SPECIAL OFFER)

Be warned that this component can be a bit of a bugler to remove due to rust.

Good luck

Dave

thanks for the info dave, would it olso do it when going into reverse gear aswell mate, cos it does.cheers mik:)

Do a search but could be any one or more of a million things, propshafts, bushes, transfer box, gearbox input shaft splines, a frame ball joint, diffs, halfshafts, hub bearings etc, etc.

Yes it would Mik, but just to build your knowledge of the vehicle and it's issues, do as Hughesy says, do a search.

On my wifes 200, which had the same symptoms it was the A-frame balljoint.

Cheers
Dave

My 1999 Auto makes a little clunk when i go from 1st to reserve etc, apparently its the take up in the diffs, maybe somthing to do with that, sorry i can't be anymore help

Welcome to the clunk club!!!

Mine also has various clunks... One when you take your foot off the clutch to quickly without matching revs. This as far as I am aware is the back lash on the props being taken up.

My other clunk is when i take my foot off the accelerator. This I am told is the fact that my output from the gearbox is warn and also the transfer gear that it attaches to is warn giving you a clunk when you take the drive away.

Mine is going in for a new transfer gear tomorrow. Will let you know if it sorts it out!

Sounds very similar to mine, it could be anything in the drivetrain really. I suspect mine is the front diff because it sounds like it's coming from the front and I can turn the prop shaft by hand about 30 degrees (guess) with the thing in neutral. I also suspect my main box and transfer box have wear in 'em too, but nowhere near bad enough to suspect imminent failure.

Personally I'm not bothered about the clunking so I'm waiting for the thing to break properly before fixing - it could last for another 5 minutes or it could last another 5 years you just don't know... I figure if I'm right and it's the front diff, I can get home in diff lock if it goes. If it's the transfer box or main box, I've got AA cover so I'll get it recovered home and buy recon boxes from ashcrofts or sommat. Well those are the contingency plans anyway. It's all down to personal choice.

The ball joint is a good suggestion, but I think you'd also get clunky noises over rough ground with no gear changing if that was buggered - mine does that too!
