Hiya, Just bought a 99 1.8XI 3dr, and when I take off hard, or floor it in first or second there is a loud clunk type noise from underneath (drive shaft area).

Any ideas? Should there be any/much play in the rubber housing the support bearing? I can lift the rear prop shaft about 5mm by hand (good push), could this be it?

Finally, is there an easy test to see if the VCU is stiff/seased? I'm getting lots of traction on rear wheel when turning tight, is this normal?

Many thanks. T

I'd say its the rear diff mount also, I had the same problem for a couple of months before replacing it and it resolved it. Cost around £15 for the part and is a half hour job.

Mine used to have a ot of knock when taking up and letting off drive.

Apart from a loose from brake caliper which stopped a lot of it, I still had some knocking.

tried lots of things and in the end it turned out to be the drivers door hinges !!!

adjusted the door alignment slightly and a liberal use of white spray grease and now no knocks at all !!!

Well, I checked last night and the front rear diff mount is indeed gone! Many thanks for the advice, saved me a few quid in the garage.

Cheers Guys

T
