Info and update on the above problem on a 2002 TD4. Changed the VCU about 5,000 miles ago (Bell unit) and clunk has come back when on tight lock. Bit of investigation suggests it may be wear in the diff as the nose of the diff was 'kicking up' in the air when on tight lock. The clunk was the UJ being forced to its extreme position !

So - haing tried front diff mount replacement, with littel improvement, I have just fitted a polypropolyne bush to the front diff mount. Result ! I still get a 'purr' from the diff, but the nose of the diff is held firm and no clunk or UJ damage results !

Thought I'd pass this on. It seems that Freelanders are all tight on full lock but as I knew the VCU was good then this was worth investigating further. Cheers.

Hi,

Yes VCU is fine at around 35 lb/ft to turn it at the back wheel. See my previous posts in the VCU Torque Tests thread - but my rule of thumb is anything over 70 lb/ft is worth testing properly.

Oh - forgot, clunk only when going forwards, front of diff seems unable to point downwards when in reverse !!!

Angry dwarf with a hammer trapped underneath?

Find a quiet car park and get someone to drive it while you listen around it for where it's coming from. Watch you don't get run over if out of sight.

Or park it in a river to drown the dwarf.

it does at the moment ;)

i haven't heard of the dwarf thing before but mines probly got that anorl :(
Drowning it is easier that trying to catch it.

Also check drop links int hitting the suspension if the main dealer who changed yer auto put 1 on the wrong way round. Check sump guard int loose and the front insert nuts int loose. Had both happen on mine.
