Hi People,

I seem to be getting a random clunk from the clutch which I am startting to investigate and as im not a mechanic could ndo with some help.

With the engine turned off when I depress the clutch peddle there is no noise at all but with the engine running and stationery when I press the peddle there is a loudish clunkcing noise as the peddle travels towards the bottom of the press.

An ideas or thoughts would be most welcome

Also I have another problem when channging up from 5th to 4th gear there is a loudish single clicking noise from the gearbox with and without engine running (If I pull the gearstick gently downwards from the 5th gear position keaping it to the right there is no noise until I allow the stik to go back to the neutrel position). I seem to be plagued with problems at the moment and am worried about the cost of these and other repiars so any advice would be very welcome. Jus havng a steering problem sorted this weekend and hope this puts an end to the repair bills

I'm even thinking about selling it now which would be a shame as its an S reg 300tdi safari with only 70k on the clock and in lovely condition with no chasis rust at all (undersealed from new). I paid £3500 for it with new Goodrich AT tyres, new exhaust, new cambelt etc etc so it should go on forever, I'm just a little concered about the running costs and ongoing reliability with repairs etc etc I gues after all it is a land rover!!

Dunno about the clutch really ..

But the gearchange might be the bias plate. Under the centre console, at the base of the gear lever is a metal H gate called the bias plate, the gearlever sits in it with springs and bushes and 'holds' itself in the normal position and allows the lever to move correctly to work the gear change mechanisms. If the plate is broken this might explain the click.

It could also be the nylon bush the lever sits in broken .. in fact could be almost amything .. but the above is relatively easy to check yourself and repair. ;)

Noise going from 5th to 4th is absolutely normal. It is the spring that prevents you going from 5th to reverse clicking out.

Noise on clutch depression could be clutch release bearing - do you know if the clutch has been changed?

Thanks for the reply, I see we almost live in the same village so nice to hear from you!

I wouldnt think the clutch has been replaced as its only done 70k and no mention in the srvice history. It also tows without any problems except the one I have mentioned which appeairs to be random.

Cheers

I'm also looking for help with repairs both now and in the future so if anyone out there fancies helping out for extra cash in hand at a fair price then I would love to hear from you. I live in Garford Oxfordshire.

Jobs to do so far

Steering sometimes stiff at random at fullish lock mainly on sharpish left hand bends at slowish speeds,is fine most of the time although it is getting more frequent prob due to faulty swivel joint

Offside wheel bearing
Sunroof removal and reseal

cheers
