Sounds like its coming from transfer box, is it poss that swopping this could cure the problem?
is it better to try and get a decent used one or recon the excisting one?? anybody know?

Don't rush to the bank just yet. It may well be your gbox or tbox but eliminate all the other (cheaper and easier to fix) problems first.

Sounds more like an A-frame joint from the description - they are a bitch to change but cheap (buy some plasters - you'll need them).

Ha ha no I have had it to an expert who was putting his money on it being trany box or gearbox or both he said, this guy drove it and said it was coming from the middle so it kind of points to trans box. just going to check the shaft for play.

Prob nowt wrong with tbox, sounds like play on output shaft of gearbox and tbox input gear, some times you can get away with just replacing input gear.

nup am doin it me sen :scratching_chin:
you seem to be convinced its gearbox / transfer box related, so in reply to the pm (ask on here as more heads give more options than just me replying to pm's), feel free to check the gear on the main box output shaft, but I reckon theres other stuff to check as well.

with assistance from a suitable person, with the engine running, hold the footbrake on and raise the clutch at a sufficient speed to find the biting point and make the clunk. either forward gear or reverse, or both, get it to make its clunk while stationary then narrow down where its coming from.

have you removed the mainbox output shaft bearing plate yet, or is it still driveable?

oh, and securely chock the wheels if your groping about checking bushes while doing this!

taken the out put shaft cover off and had a look but the problem is am on my own and could do with an extra pair of hands for an hour? the noise defo sounds like its coming from the gearbox or trans box.

Sorted this problem out it was the clutch that was knackered so replaced it, Thanks to forum member Captain skellon for helping me how and showing me how to go on I learnt a lot, I will put some pics on aswell when I get a minute.
