Clicking noise!!! Any help would be great!

Hi,

My 200tdi has developed a ticking noise from the engine when the engine is running. The ticking increases as more throttle is applied.

At the same time (I am sure it's not coincidence), it's started to really much through oil. I have just been to the lake district and back - about 800 miles and it's got through 2 litres.

Any help would be much appreciated. I really don't have a clue what it could be!!!

oil use may have nothing to do with noise, could be a tappet, or maybe broken piston ring which could be connected to oil usage, need more info, has noise been there a while

The noise started just before Christmas so has done about 800 miles like it. Before then, there was no excess oil usage.

There doesn't appear to be a great deal of difference in performance. Perhaps pulling away a little slower, although it has been fully loaded. Still sat at 70-75 on the motorway fine.

A mate drove behind me and said that it was producing a bit of a smell, guess that is all the oil it's getting through?

how clued up on engines are you?

sounds like its definately burning it and i would go back to broken ring

You may have dropped a valve. Take the rocker cover off and have a look.

Fair point. Would have noticed down on power with a dodgy valve.

Had a mechanic look at it and he thinks it's the head gasket.... quoted £450 to replace.

Does this sound like it could be the problem and is it a good price?

you could get a good entire engine for half that

you any good with spanners ?

afraid not... never done anything under the bonnet other than top up the oil

this is an opportunity to save yourself £300, at least £300

pretty clueless to be honest...

How long do you think it should take for someone doing it from a manual?

Are there any specific tools/equipment required?

4-5 hours and maybe £80 worth of tools, most of that would be one one tool - plus the gasket, and maybe a skim

have a read of the following, see if it scares you off - there must be someone off here close that would come and assist ?
