Disco 2 Clicking from under middle of car

Here's a view from looking in through the inspection cover of a box I dismantled a while ago, top middle is where the bolt goes in, if it's too long it will lock or interfere with the low range gear.

thanks mate.

what bolts look the same as that 1 (ie, which bolt could they have put in it's place?)

does that bolt have to come out the remove the t/box?

Any of the bolts which secure the gearbox to the transfer box could be incorrectly inserted.

And yes that bolt has to be removed to split the boxes/remove the tbox.

I've just been having a think, if that bolt was hitting the gear then wouldn't it be clicking constantly? like a a few ticks every second? ... I only get a click when i take my foot off the accelerator ... a click then maybe 1 second gap, then another click.

is it possible the front prop could have been fitted wrong, which is creating a click?

It's unlikely. There's a couple of possibilities that relate to the prop though, 1) the UJ's may have been close to knackered and removal has accelerated failure. 2) the prop has been separated at the slider and inserted incorrectly clocked... IF they had problems removing the prop it's possible they could've left it bolted onto the flanges and split ti at the slider to get the box off. I'm not saying it's likely, just it's a possibility.

I removed the front prop before christmas as 1 of the UJ's was completely shot, the other 2 looked fine (but I'll have another look tonight)... so they shouldn't of had any problems removing it. should the front prop be out of phase or in phase? Lot's of mixed results in google.

Pretty sure it needs to be in phase, the kardan should take car of most issues. Not sure that it being out of phase would resulted in a clicking, maybe James will know better, think it can just result in non uniform rotational velocity, it spins faster at certain points of the rotation.

Other things to check are that the harmonic dampers aren't loose.

thanks.

i'm beginning to wish I had never bought this disco. it's been nothing but problems!

I had a good look at things over the weekend.

The hand break and t/box are ruled out.

I think the clicking is either coming from the front prop or the front diff.

I can move the front prop maybe a millimeter or 2 where it joins the front diff.

I am fairly sure that this should not have any movement, and should be solid.

I'm going to replace the other 2 UJ's in the front prop this weekend (hopefully) and have a look at the front diff, i'm slightly worried that something is worn and making it wobble ... maybe it needs a new bearing.

FIXED AT THE WEEKEND!!!!!!

So, the garage replaced my front diff pinion oil seal, they didn;t tighten up the bloomin flange bolt!!!!

When i took my front prop off I could undo the damn thing with my fingers!!

So i tightened it up and now there is no more clicking, woop!!!

luckily there isn't any damage / wear that I can see.

Thanks for your help guys, it was very appreciated.

Glad you got it sorted, nothing worse than a noise that irritates you and you cannot find the cause, luckily u did.

It was really getting me down, i'm glad i went to replace my UJ's otherwise I probably wouldn't have found it.

i took it back to the garage and they reckon it was coming from the front wheel.

I even said to them I don;t think something was done up tight enough.

I phoned the garage and told them what it was, they were extremely rude to me and said it was loose when they took it off!! lying F*CKERS!!!

I won't be going back there again.

I need to find me a decent LR garage for the bigger jobs.
