Freelander 1 Cleaning crud

So iv started to crack on with servicing the other halfs Freelander. I thought I might aswell take of the inlet manifold and clean it out aswell. [GALLERY=][/

I will be giving all this a good clean out [GALLERY=][/GALLERY]

The engine is just as bad and am wondering how to clean the engine with all the crud going into it. Does anyone have any advice ? [GALLERY=][/GALLERY]

I removed my EGR valve and fitted a blanking kit, but I'd recommend washing it in kerosene or diesel. My inlet manifold was caked with a mixture of soot/oil, I poured neat road Traffic Film Remover, though any strong detergent will do, into the inlet manifold, let it soak, then blasted through all 9 ports with a pressure washer lance. This really whipped up the TFR and cleaned it out well. Obviously I'd say you don't want this black oily slidge on your driveway, so I'd suggest borrowing another car and taking the inlet manifold and the TFR to a carwash place with one of those coin operated jetwash machines. When I did our freelanders inlet manifold and turbo ducting, I did it at my workshop using a neighbours industrial pressure washer, then washed the ground chasing the sludge / suds into the drain.

Jet wash at the local Asda sounds like a good plan now. I will be scrapping out as much as I can 1st then was going to blast it with car cleaner and then soak it in over cleaner. Then I will use ur Idea and take it elsewhere to jet wash. Save my drive .what did you do with the cam cover and engine block ? Mine is proper sludged up and don't fancy getting to much of that in the engine

Oh - forgot to say, if you are meaning the black sludge is also in the ports on the head, you'll have to be very careful cleaning them out as you don't want that black sludge falling from the wals of the port and sitting the inlet valves, where it could get lodged between the seat and the valve. I'd recommend a solvent that totally evaporates, such as brake cleaner, or celulose thinners, and a place a rag on a stick or a scredirver etc, then when you've cleaned the ports, stick an airline dust gun down the ports to blow out and grit/sludge fragments that have fallen into the top of the valves.

I did once watch a friend scaping all the sludge into the engine with it running to get rid of it and burn it off. This was on a Nissan qashqai. I don't fancy doing that tho all that hot stuff flying about and flames haha

Ok thanks I will have to dog the compressor out to blow it all out thanks. It's the bit I most bothered about getting any of that in.the engine

The engine will deal with small amounts of that black crud. What do you think happens to the crud if it becomes dislodged when you're driving along? It gets ingested by the engine and burns off and goes down exhaust.

John as hit the nail on the head do nowt with the crud in the head ports, it will burn off after a time, I recently changed two manifolds EGR & MAP sensors Tuesday, another one to do tomorrow, I already have 6 waiting so I can clean them at my own leisure.

Ok well I know what I will doing all weekend cleaning out all that gunk and finishing the service. Just got the fuel filter and fuel pump to change. Thanks for the advice
