Cleaning 200TDI intercooler

dear all,

A defender 200 TDI engine year 1990... Are there good reasons for me to clean the intercooler with thinner? I'm fairly new to the inner workings on an engine.

The consensus in here seems to be that it is best to clean it out with petrol or thinners till it runs clean. You get oil build up from the engine breather pipes and this reduces the efficiency of the inter cooler.

It is also a good opportunity to check to see if you have any leeks in the inter cooler as this also reduces its efficiency

I use bike chain degreaser once a year or so.its less agressive on the alloy.
