With the various clean air zones coming in soon I’ve done some checks to see if I’m going to get charged and finding it vary confusing.
In Manchester cars are exempt for who knows how long
Vans won’t be
There is a government web page vehicle checker for clean air zones now to find out if charges apply
As far as I can see, any defenders pre-2000 are coming up as cars and exempt, regardless of engines, size, or anything, even big utility high capacities.
Younger than 2000 anything other than counties are comping up as vans and due to be charged.

Don’t know if this is set in stone for the charging system now and all older defenders will be ok, or just a glitch and all vans/pickups will actually cop for the charge?
My main motors pre-2000 but down as a van on the logbook so I’m hoping it’s the former.

Manchester getting more confusing than ever. Just had a quick luck on that site. Appreciate only for hgv Bob buses lgv not Joe public cars Yet. Oldham road a main artery like Rochdale road and Duck Cheetham Hill road to town not flagged. Definitely a money earner for bleating cash strapped MCC

I would say just like London, if its not a Euro6 (post 2015/16) they are coming to get you.

That is the first time I have been able to use a checker. Mine is 1993 so hopefully I have a little more time before they apply the tax to me.

What happens if you use a motorway through these areas?

The greater Manchester is huge!

Not yet. The CAZ is like the London LEZ, mainly about commercials. It appears to be a bit more generous than London on historic vehicles, in that over 20 years old are exempt.

I would guess that a Manchester ULEZ will follow in a few years time, as you say, Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesels only.

Same as London, all through routes as

So do you get charged on the motorways? Greater Manchester includes the M60, M62, etc. so if these are included it with have a huge impact on many journeys.

I really need to start researching all these new zones/charges!

I am not up to date with London as I avoid where I can and have only gone in via work, which was usually by train. Are there charges on the M25 etc as I used to drive down to Dartford but have not been since before covid.

You will get charged if you have a non compliant vehicle. Manchester or London.

London, LEZ starts at the M25. As far as I know, the M25 itself is not part of the LEZ.

ULEZ, the charge zone is the inside kerb of the North and South Circulars, and all inside those boundaries.
ULEZ will probably be extended to the M25, same as the LEZ, in a few years.

I go to London all the time, but I rarely drive in the City itself, it is no pleasure, and there is no need.

Thanks Turboman, I appreciate your time.
I am not a city type of person and have little desire to travel into them. I am right on the edge of the Pennine moors and am happy with my location (though I would appreciate the rain being a little less persistent).

I don't do many miles in the truck but if I do go on a trip I don't want to travel through multiple charging areas especially as it would probably be charged on the way out, then again on the way back.

No worries. I am on it with this stuff, because my parents live within the ULEZ.

You should be OK at the moment, but you need to follow the ULEZ roll outs.
It isn't that hard to get round. Driving a Land Rover long distance is no great pleasure either.
So it would make sense to use that for local mileage, and simply hire a compliant car if you need to go long distance passing through multiple ULEZes.
Or you could go Historic, which many in the South have done.

I potentially want to start using the truck to go to some shoots which would include a bit of off road work at the other end. I agree on the comfort for longer journeys which is why I would not be doing quick back and forwards trips. I could quite easily be carrying a bit of steel too, so betterthana car forthat.
I used to do quite a few miles in the S3s when in the army, and compared the defender is great, but still not a leisurely drive - but it does put a grin on your face.

PS I am hoping I can stave off the charges as long as possible to help get the truck to historic status - but still 11 years to go!!!!

Sounds like a good reason to get a Petrol or Diesel 109". Or even a V8 One Ten, which will be coming up for Historic Reg in about 3 years.
