:) Thank's to all who advised me reagrding the non start problem on my 1989 Classic

The fault was indeed the Coolant temperature sensor as advised and after it's replacement the car started first try and so far has remained so.
 The sting in the tail

Starts and drives really well but the tickover reaches about 1100 when you pull up and put it into park. If you switch off and restart the engine will remain a constant 700, rev up or drive and the engine will again settle at about 1100

Any ideas ?

Thank's Fred

So you got it running almost perfectly - marvelous!

Suggestions on the idle:
1. Sticky throttle plate
2. Check for air leaks anywhere around intake area! (Check piping for cracks)
3. Should it be a 3.9 hotwire, I'd recommend that you should clean the stepper motor behind the plenum.
4. Clean engine breather filter and hose (the cylinder on the top of the RH valve cover)

Thank's TimoV
1. Checked for leaks and unable to find any yet.
2. Don't think ist hotwire, Maf is just a flapper valve and gubbins. What does the hot wire look like ?
3. Cleaned the filter last week, full of gunge, so I will see if I can buy a new one locally as it still looks dirty.

Thank you very much for your help.

Different :D

Check for the sticky throttle plate/cable. They give sometimes this kind of problems. I had one with my previous truck (1986 EFI with flapper system).

Clean the throttle levers, check the adjustment screw (that stops the levers to move, small) and lubricate cable.

You might also clean the extra air valve (on the RH front of intake manifold). It has two hoses, one that goes to the back of the plenum and one that goes to the upstream side of throttle plate. It is fixed with two bolts, be careful when unscrewing these. I snapped the other when I was servicing it. You can clean it (and the hoses) with e.g. brake cleaner.

The EAV has something to do with the idle, but I doubt that it would give these symptoms. It sounds like a small air leak or the sticky throttle plate/cable

Here's my 3.9 so you should see a difference

Thank's for your help I will clean the air valve and pipes etc. this morning and let you know how I get on

Hi Guys
Lubricated the linkage
Checked for leaks.... found clip undone on hose leading to the casting that has two hoses and Bosh written on it, it has a plug on the rear that obscures a bolt. I plug would not come out so I have left that for the moment.

Is this the gubbins you said to clean ?

Started her up.. First time .... ticked over ok .... then the tickover increased about 1100.... selected Drive and the revs dropped....selected park and the revs settled quickly to 500.. is this correct?

I have just been out after 5 mins and tickover 600rpm and smooth.

I have also found that the tamper proof plug has been removed from the large allen screw in the plenum and the potentiometer has been moved at some time (Yellow markers on screws are not as original). I have not touched them myself.

Off now for a test drive

I will keep in touch

Regards Fred
