Classic Range Rover Vs Classic Discovery?

Just watched Top Gear Bolivia Special (for the umpteenth time) Really prefer the Rangey to the Disco, this just reminds me how much.

For your budget I would go for a low spec (no ABS, no airbag) 300 tdi Discovery automatic with no sunroofs.
Free landers and Discos don't (in my opinion) share many faults. So the engine shouldn't blow up (1.8 petrol), the VCU won't cause gearbox failure and the windows should go up and down for longer.
However, the clutch fork may fail (manual), the cam belt may fail if left too long, the ignition switch and diesel lift pump will need replacing at around 100k miles.
Looking at your location, may I suggest that you join the Solent and district landrover club (SADLRC). I think it's only £20 per year and has plenty of events. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the St John Barleycorn at Cadnam so the next meet is in a couple of days, feel free to come along.

Apart from them both rotting, RRC tailgates can fly open when you hit a bump; Disco tailgates just jam themselves shut 'cos they are so fooking heavy. Plus you can sit on a RRC tailgate to eat your picnic.

I disagree the Range Rovers and Discoverys are rot boxes. They are no worse than any other mass market car of that time, and a lot easier to repair than most. How many other early 1980s mass market cars are there still on the road in any numbers?

I'm biased. I had a '76 3 door RRC v8 manual in the late '80's.

I really enjoyed my time with it, but it was expensive to run back then. I still have a soft spot for Range Rovers of all varieties.

Discos are common as muck, even my father has one.

I'm sticking with the Freelander as it fulfils all my current needs.
