Classic Range Rover - Power Steering fluid - help please.

Just spent a satisfying evening replacing the steering box on my classic
Range Rover. Old box was flooding fluid from the output shaft seal. Quite
common I gather.

Everything came undone fairly easily and it all went back together ok too.
Man that thing is heavy though.

The moment of truth has not yet arrived though as I'm not sure what power
steering fluid to put in it. Should it be Dexron II or Dexron III ? Is there
any problem with mixing the two (I'm think here of the residue of old fluid
in the reservoir, pump and hoses)? Also, will I need to bleed the system in
any way?

Not exactly a technical reply, but our customers seem to chuck
anything in with ATF on the tin! I'm not saying that's
the correct thing to do.
Actually, I've just had a thought. My 110 has 239,000 miles
on the clock now and the power steering systems has *never*
leaked (it's bone dry in all the usual leaky places), and
has never even been topped up. I wonder, could that be
significant - after all it still has the original Land Rover
fluid it it......... hmmmmmmmmmm?

This must be a World record?
My experience is that PS boxes last between 40,000 and 100,000 miles
depending on vehicle duty. I don't mind the leaks and don't replace because
of this unless it really ****es out. The average longevity of Defender/early
Disco/classic RR steering boxes is unreasonably low and a consequence of a
poorly engineered unit. At least recon ones are reasonably priced compared
to the [seldom needed] Jap and German units.

As for fluid, any ATF *Dexron* type fluid is interchangeable. Other types of
ATF should not be used.
