Classic lower tailgate hinge spring

I have replaced my rear crossmember a few months ago now, and am just now getting round to putting it all back together, but I cannot fathom out how the tension springs for the lower tailgate hinges go into place, I've figured that they obviously have to have a twist in them in order to apply tension to them, but as I do not have another to look at I'm stuck as to how the go back correctly, I have no doubt that it'll be a pig to do, that goes without saying!! Any ideas anyone or a couple of pictures would be a great help

hi mate , phew !!!!!! its been a while since i did my classic rear x member , over the years i did a few , but from memory its dead easy the springs work in a torsion bar sort of idea .
you will notice each spring is located on the hinge and the other end has a 90 degree bend on it , originally this located in a small hole in the rear x member ( i doubt very much that the hole will be there on yours , it certainly wasnt on mine) .
all i did was the mark the location of the hole and drill one for each spring............easy , then again this is from memory but , if im wrong someone i sure will correct me , there is a "p" clip type fastener which is secured to each spring just before the 180 degree bend , the purpose of this i think maybe twofold 1 to stop it rattleing and 2 to stop it distorting when the tailgate is dropped .

Thanks, I have the 'P' clips still, I will have a look again tomorrow bearing that in mind, the fact that I'm trying to find a hole that isn't there may explain why I can get them to work. Thanks for the clues, fingers crossed I'll get some tension on them tomorrow.

hi glad i could help mate , the tension is only on the torsion bars when then tailgate is in the lowered postion bear in mind .
