'96 N reg 300TDI, (unluckally 2 sunroofs grrrrrrr lol)

Got a unusal noise that came from under the bonnet last night.

You can only hear it when the accelerator is pressed down, doesnt do it under hard acceleration and is intermitment.

Sounds like a churp like the belt tensioner but a lot louder and only does it when under load not at idle not matter how much you rev the engine.

I've not noticed a drop in power and oils seem ok.

I dont think its the belt tensioner as i've changed a few on my mates with god knows how many belts too.

I've had a gander at the previous threads and i'm stumped.

Any ideas??

Ta

Thinking HOPING it's something down them lines, easy enought to do and cheap too..

And the really cold weather dont help either, does yours go away when the engine is a lot warmer?

I've been thinking about this now and i'm not convinced that it's the tensioner or even the water pump... the churping sounds fairly loud and only does it well i press the accelerator and it has to be driving to hear it.

It's the have to be driving that gets me, the water pump and tensionor is always moving, even when i rev while stationary it dont do it.

Really really bizarre.

mine seems to do it more when its been stood for a day or so which makes me think its a bearing in the water pump and when i put my lug hole near pump it does seem to be coming from there

If yours does it when the car is not moving try squirting WD40 on the belt. If the noise goes away then I would say its the belt/tensioner rather than the water pump bearings

You sure it's not a prop UJ? They sounds like chirping and that would explain why it's only when you're moving. I had the same thing when my front UJ was on it's way out and I was convinced it was coming from the engine bay....penny trick and shaking the props to check the UJ's will be cheap and easy to do. Nice weather for it! :)

Thanks guys for the replies.

I've had a looksie at the front Prop, does have movement in it, but tbh i'm not to sure how much it's really supposed to have.
It does go up and down and left to right. I've re greased it as well.

Mine was the lift pump, somehow cover the in and outlet pipes on it with ticking over, if it stops, it's that. If not, then it isn't

; )

It shouldn't have much play in it at all - hard to quantify though. If you can easily move it more than 1cm on any axis I would say that's too much. Hopefulyl someone will correct me if I'm wrong! Mine was flapping around loads so was easy to tell!

hey guys update time.

Sorry it's been a while net's been playing up grr.

Well after thinking it was the water pump, been to the shop and bought one with gasket and 2 wheel nuts for £25 was all set to replace it on the sat just gone.

Well on me way down south to canterbury, had an ERRR moment when i started to coast that noise i heard came back really really loud and didnt sound nice either.
the thing that worries me is it disappears when the clutch is put down.

now i havent replace the pump as now i'm thinking it's A1, and thinking its either
1, diff
2, gearbox
3, clutch release bearing?

not thinking its the wheel bearings as it stops when the clutch is presses down, and doesnt do it when i'm accelerating.

gonna make an appointment for her in the docs tomorrow..

Any ideas???

cheers in advance.

so ya thinking it might be the release bearing, bloody horrible noise and gives a little vibration.
Only had the bloody clutch done mid last year to, after the clutch fork decided to become a little holey lol.

Would it whine when coasting by any chance.

i only hear the noise when the wagons moving, doesnt do it when stopped.
No noise when clutch pressed.

It's a new one on me and got to be honest shat it so sat at 62 for 265 miles and er joined the RAC yesterday lol.
