so are you saying that if the wrong grade of oil was used it may effect the engine??? especially if the oil hasn't been changed for a while??? the crap left by the old oil could be causing friction in places in the engine???

and mineral oil is the best for older engines is that not true??

Oh you do make life complicated. If you have a brand new motor use whatever the manufacturer recommends. If your motor is getting a bit long in the tooth i would use a slightly thicker grade at the top end of the recommended grades. If say a brand new motor had 10W 30 in it, then as the engine gains mleage i would use 15W 40. I have always believed that changing oil and filter twice as often as recommended prolongs engine life. In a diesel this is even more true. So which would you rather do, change it twice a year with fully synthetic oil (which is slightly better oil) at £90.00 a throw or use mineral oil at £30.00 a change. Obvisously the first option would be best but who can afford to do that. Mineral oil or even semi synthetic if you want to spend a little more is quite adiquate. If your not keeping the oil in for 12,000 miles why by 12,000 mile life oil.

Totally agree.
Oil is one of the most overlooked of engine components, moreso with diesels....
I use the cheapest oil provided it is up to the appropriate SAE spec and virtually all of them are........and change the oil and filter every 4 > 6k miles.....(As I fitted a new engine 22k miles ago I've also avoided using synthetic).

Also used cheap oil and regular changes with a diesel van I had a while back...ran up 250k miles in it and the engine was still strong (and I mean performed superbly) when I got rid of it....

Cheap oil changed twice a year or every 4 > 6k miles is better than waiting for a 12k change using the expensive stuff (Especially as the specifications can be identical.....)
Check it next time you are buying oil.....

So IMHO...cheap oil changed more often beats expensive oil at longer change intervals especially with old tech which the V8 lump is...and IMHO it provides better engine protection.....

PS what I also find invaluable is a very strong rare earth magnet strapped to the bottom of the oil filter

Yeah i'll go along with that, better use for it than strapping it to your fuel pipe to line up the molecules. Some folk will believe owt.

rub baby oil into all the belts in the engine bay.The extra lubrication reduces the friction by some 75% ergo increasing your fuel efficiency by a wopping 99.9%.

Better still remove the belts altogether. You get brilliant MPG figures between boil ups. You can stop the coolant from boiling over by draining the system. Works every time. Another brilliant concept is disc pad oil. Specially formulated oil drips from the special delivery system. Helps reduce friction, pads and discs never need changing. Only £99.99 plus VAT per wheel. Extra specially formulated oil £65.00 plus vat per litre.

Don't work on cars it could lead to tears. My lad is down your way, he has a removal company. Did you see a bloody great green removal truck with ARMY ANTZ written on it today? Would have a few bob with you on that bet but don't take money off ladies. Unless they are completely satisfied of course. My cash is on belt tensioner pulley or idler. Belt is always loaded more just after start as alternator replenishes battery, therefore more load on belts/pulleys. Less when warm and battery charged.

i don't like cars!!! tractors are my fav... thats why i get on with me rangie reminds me of me tractors. Renault and case are my fav's..
no i didn't see your lad, you should have told him to pop in to my shop in newton abbot could have made him a coffee!!!

and you didn't leave much on the engine left to make the noise, so possible that it could be one of those!!!!
