I have heard tell that LR diesels can be modified to run on used chip oil.
Is someone having a laugh or does anyone know if it can work?
Thanks

Hi Zebede, theres a rather lengthy thread on the subject started by tigapiglet here: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/showthread.php?t=22566

I'm interested in this also, there seems to be points for and against, I guess the only way to find out is to try it, I'm thinking on along the line of 30 % Veggie oil from a shop not used, and 60 % standard diesel (Biodiesel?), but I have yet to pluck up the courage to actually do it...

I love my landy way to much... :D

I did catch a program this afternoon in which a guy ran a diesel 4 x 4 of some sort for 10,000 miles round trip on it, and it seemed none the worse for it.. I also have a friend who ran a Pug 205 on striaight Vegtable Oil (SOV) for a year with no problems, exceprt the smell LOL...

hth

From all I've heard the only down side is the smell, it's like....well a chip shop. I think the real downside would be it making me feel hungry all the time. :D

Check out the thread, it's pretty comprehensive.

wot you need is a fuel tank heater then when y'awl get to wur ye gitting yer fish and chips would be ready. and if you bung yer chicken in foil under the bonnet you could have a choice of dinner. but what ever you do don't put kippers in the heater ducts!

Well running on veggie for about 8 mths since i done the heat exchanger it runs and starts better and smells not quite so bad fuel consumption about the same as normal diesel the main thing is the engine is quieter running on svo so there you are no problems yet still grinning.tiga.

hows your rangie running on veggie bigstoo what mix are you using and hows the hot starting going, im using 40% as its getting colder but still grinning cheers tiga.

you know what tiga. i took the rangey in for some major work on the engine a few weeks ago, incl a couple new pistons etc. when i got it back, hot start is fine now, its cold start that i have to do 3 or 4 glows before it starts. after reading other posts it looks like fuel going back down the pipe overnight, but i can live with that. it was the embarresment of hot starts that got me.

as for veggie mix, im only doing about 70/30, but running fine so far. i think tescos think i own a burger van not a rangey :D

Bigstoo - 70% veg and 30% diesel - Good strong mix!

Does anybody know where to buy cheap veggie oil?
Tescos is about 47p to 43p a litre

I am currently using wvo and svo - but filtering wvo oil is rather messy hehehe
:)

I occasionally run my defender 300tdi on around a 60/40 mix, I actually reackon it runs better!

I have run stronger mixes, but I found it didnt like starting from cold without a heat exchanger.

Of course i fill out my EX109 form and give it to customs;)

Strangely, veg oil is cheaper to buy off the supermarket shelf than in bulk. i always get a few looks when I fill my trolley up..lol

dont know if this helps any one but i was looking on ebay the other day and they where selling a heater that fits on your fuel line they said that is all you need to run on oil dont know if this is right or wrong might be worth a look at see wot some of you pros think and if it would work

nooooo niburu, 70% diesel, 30% veg! i might tweak it up to 50/50 after winter. ive looked at bulk buying from makro the cash n' carry place, but tesco's is still cheaper! just that 5L is the biggest tesco do, as apposed to 20L drum from makro, but because of the price diff i dont mind the extra hassle.

AHA the eternal question doing the rounds at th emoment is Veggie oil in a disco....So may I ask you folks are you using SVO and just putting it in your tank with a blended mix of 70-30 or 60-40? without any problems or have you added any other devices to heat up the oil ?

do a search on this site and you will find all the info you need.
but in a nutshell, you can certainly use a 50/50 mix derv/svo without a problem, short term.

we simply dont know the/any long term problems re the IP.

use a weaker mix in the colder months. to do it right, you should fit a 2 tank system and heat the svo line. then you can use nearly 100% all year round.

you must weigh up the pros and cons of doing this. i dont give a flying fook about my IP cause my disco aint worth that much, yours may be way different to mine. and if you have any warranty on your disco, then dont do it.

Be careful guys, you are supposed to pay duty on any oil used in a motor vehicle. I think it's about 23p Litre. If HM Customs & Excise rumble what your doing, without paying the duty, your in big trouble, It's the same as running Red diesel in their eyes.

agreed.
make that a strong warning. if they catch you, they can/will confiscate (sp?) your car!
