Eyup you lot,

I have an ex MoD S3 without a seat or seat belt in the middle, however the lap belt fixings are there. I wish to construct a comfy seat for my six-year old granddaughter to perch between my wife and I.

What do people do, seatwise, in these circumstances?

Would be safer on the outer seat. I have a classic Land Rover magazine all about fitting a child seat securely to an old Land Rover. Dunno whether the fixings they use could've adapted for the centre seat.
I can send you some pictures of the article if required.

The simplest way would be to fit a proper middle seat, and install a child seat that can be used with a lap belt. The advantage is that the middle seat can then be used by adults for occasional short trips.

The law states that an approved child seat must be used- it's a bit backwards but a purpose-built smaller seat would most likely not be acceptable, despite being better suited to the job. For insurance purposes a standard bolt-in solution is almost certain to be better received than a DIY job.

I've been toying with retrofitting an Isofix type mounting, but as you say a standard solution is probably better from an insurance standpoint. Grrrrrrr.

Looking at videos of how far a childs head moves in a crash, even a restrained one, and the position of the gear lever in an S3 I wouldn't have done it with my kids. But then in my day we just rolled around on the back seat of Dads Cortina :)
