Apparently the Chinese have been complaining about quality. Looking at what else we get from China, if they're complaining then it really must be poor
In the last 5 years, Chinese manufacturing has improved 1000 fold. Quality of products from major Chinese manufacturer's products now exceeds that of many western companies, at under 1/2 the manufacturing costs.

I buy a lot of things direct from China - its still a lottery, some things are dangerous rubbish, some are well made but have stupid mistakes, either in design or assembly, and some are just amazing for the price. But you really don't know until it turns up. If everything they made was as good as the best they can do we would have a serious problem.

The Chinese factory was part of a partnership to make cars out there to avoids import cost which are quite high. JLR still control and own things like designs. A lot of Chinese factories have a link to some level of state ownership.

The tratter production line was scrapped when they stopped making them at Solihull. Very small bits went to third party companies so they can make parts to keep them going with after sales parts, where the part was still made on the line before.

The very rich in China will pay the import duty rather than buy a locally made JLR / BMW/ Audi product.

It is all about face.

I looked at Chinese made BMW and Audi vehicles back in 2012 and the quality was OK , but not to the same std as a EU made product.

Cheers

Its true there is a situation where paying more for something or buying it from the uk gives more street cred but the cost difference in china for a uk built vehicle is impossibly high for most to pay. Hence creating the local factory. Sadly problems in the main dealer network means sales have dropped in china. Dealers arguing for some time with LR.
