what I need to undo to separate the block from the gearbox as I'm leaving that in-situ.

I'd rather not go pulling and pushing until I know everything's undone.........I'm completely stripped down to the block and box so it should be straightforward

If it's an auto leave torque convertor on box. Detatche it from flexi plate.

The workshop manual mentions marking the drive plate and converter and also removing 4 bolts securing the drive plate to the converter.

Can anyone elaborate on that, I've removed the plate but I'm not sure what I'm looking at......

The torque convertor is attached to the drive plate (Flywheel) by a ring of bolts which have to be removed through the half moon aperture at the bottom of the bell housing after removing the aluminium cover plate. This means that the engine, with the drive plate attached, because it's bolted to the end of the crankshaft, comes out and leaves the torque convertor still located on the gearbox input shaft.
Look at the torque convertor and mark the orientation to the drive plate with a small dab of paint etc. so that they go back in the same position.
There is a good chance however that the drive plate has cracked in places, this is a common fault, and should be replaced. In this case, marking serves no useful purpose and th bo;lt holes will have to be realigned when the engine is refitted.
