Cheap veggie oil

Just been to Costco and they are selling 20L of veg oil for £15.99 while stocks last. Thats just under 80p a litre as there is no VAT on cooking oil.
Got some funny looks from peeps as I poured 40L into my tank in the car park. If only they knew!

You go back in and get more

I bought 100 litres. It will keep. Limit is five on any one purchase.

please excuse my lack of now how,but how would i go about running a td5 110 on the oil, and is they any downsides lack of power etc.any info appreciated..

50/50 mix and spare fuel filters............ might make you hungry as it smell like a chip shop

:search: Mate, I've had some funny looks before now pouring the Veg oil into the tank on ASDA's carpark

No lack of power. I regularly tow a 3.5 ton trailer. Veggie oil does clear the crap out of your tank and fuel system so as said carry a spare fuel filter or two. In winter I use 50/50 but during the summer a TD5 will run on a 75/25 mix no problems. I had starting issues when trying 100% veggie on a cold engine but not with 100% used engine oil. Once warm it started and ran on 100% veggie with no probs. At 80p/L I've started using clean veggie as it saves the hassle of diluting and filtering engine oil.

When I lived in France I needed to get somewhere fast, had no diesel ,garage shut for 2 hours for lunch... but lidl was open so I filled up with veg oil with the french watching in disbelief

I have a fuel filter heat exchanger going spare that goes between the fuel filter and the housing for it, means running 100% veg is okay, need to use glow plugs in winter though.

thanks for info i have often thought about using it but ,never had the confidence in case i damaged my pride and joy shooting truck.
to recap new veg oil mixed with ordinary deisel and thats it.sounds to good to be true landy running on around the 80p ltre mark,great stuff.

TD5 heats it own fuel. Go for a run then feel the tank. Also with the comression pressures generated in a TD5 (2200-3300 bar) heating the fuel is not a problem. Its the initial cold starting on pure veggie without additives that causes problems, especially if you dont have a good battery. You can mix parafin or white spirit at no more than 10% but risk getting a tug from the revenue bods. Mixing with diesel or petrol is the easier and more legally acceptable option although there is a grey area regarding the use of cooking oil for fuel purposes.

I thought you could use 2500 litres per year (personal use) completely legally, i.e. not in any way grey

Does 100% veggie not put undue strain on fuel pump? Have you had any issues with seals in the fuel system?

Do it, I did it for years and saved loads on fuel (don't currently have a doozil motor) but even if you buy veg oil from cash & carry it's still less than £1 a litre.

Oh and a 200tdi will run on a much higher ratio of veg than a td5, in fact it will happily run 100% veg in warm weather.

I have been adding 2 stroke to my diesel to cut down on smoking engine- would I still need to do this, or would the veg oil do the job of the 2 stroke?

Veg will clean the whole system through so no need for 2 stroke, buy a few spare filters before you start using it as you'll need to change it a couple of times in the beginning.
