Cheap parts or genuine parts??

My very first post here! woohoo!

Just bought my first Defender 90, and was wondering what you all think of cheap parts or genuine land rover parts?

Here's an example:

So I can get an £8 cylinder or pay £98?? WTF?

I personally hate cheap parts, but genuine parts are often too damn expensive. That wheel cylinder is a good example! For parts that you dont want to fail, then genuine or OME parts are the only way. For example I would not buy a britpart propshaft, I would buy a GKN one, same for UJ's etc. Brake vacuum pump, I would buy Webco, not Britpart. What you need to look for are the OME parts that do not come in a genuine box. I would put money on the fact that those genuine cylinders are made by delphi so the extra 70 quid is for the box! Another example is Lucus master cylinders, very cheap and what the genuine parts actually are. for cosmetic stuff Britpart may be fine (if it actually fits) but other things I would try to find the OME alternative.

with regards to the cylinder, in this case, I would go for the cheap one as there is not much mechanically that would warrent the extra £20 for delphi.

I should have added that genuine parts (may) come with a 12month warrenty. so maybe that £70 is well spent? who knows. My LR garage will only buy/fit genuine parts. He will fit those I supply but then there is no warrenty on that. I paid that price on an allmakes vaccum pump last year fitted the webco unit myself in the end. waste of time and money.

Regular advertisers in the likes of LRO seem a good bet. A local garage was doing some work for my MOT and one of the things needed was brake callipers. They phoned Frank Ogg’s (local dealer) But even they baulked at the prices and the local trade supplier they use didn’t have L/Rover parts.

I told them to use Paddock, but they wouldn’t as it was an unknown supplier. So I bought the parts and had them shipped to the garage. A couple of weeks later I was in to pick up the beast, and saw lots of packaging from P’s. I knew it wasn’t for my beast (I hoped!), so I asked. They were so surprised at the price difference that they started using P’s.

What swung it for them, was that when they phoned up, they spoke to people who actually knew what they were talking about, and that deliveries arrived within a few days. An important consideration, I suppose, when you are a small business in the Highlands of Scotland.

Yes, but paddocks use ****part! an awefull lot to, sometimes without letting you know!

Atleast try Bearmach. And I have called paddocks, the sales people are sales people, they know product codes, they dont know **** about rovers.

Britpart and some others should be avoided for items that are critical... ie bearings, clutch parts.... its a balance ie for £2 you can get a rear lamp but a genuine would cost a lot more. However, saying that I just bought a super caz steering damper made by Britpart... seems good and the price was right. If it fails I have lost £20 and its a 10 minute fix.
Buy cheap buy twice has been mentioned by wiser members.

me personally on parts that i replace regulary like fuel filters air filters etc i buy the cheapest i can..
bearings ujs and other such parts i buy a decent branded make

Thanks so much for all your replies - really helpful. I spoke to a local land rover specialist and he reckoned the genuine LR parts were ridiculously priced too. I spotted quite a bit of Dephi packaging around his workshop so I guess he probably picks wisely in the mid range price when needed.

It's good to hear that some parts you can skimp on whilst other more important stuff is worth paying the extra for.

Like my local guy said - you get what you pay for.

I fitted a 300tdi Britpart engine into my 110 yesterday, but I couldnt get the damned thing started this morning. Not sure whats wrong
