Finally a stroke of good luck for me, my mrs' old man has a charger and a battery he thinks may do the job, he is on his way now :O)

Battery was not big enough ( but the charger is a cracker and is charging up as we speak, think im going to leave it over night to give it a chance.

battery has had a good 18 hours charge, put it back on the motor, tried to turn it over, still flat, new battery time i thinks!

Not yet!

TEST the battery with a heavy discharge (sounds nasty that huh) tester.

The battery may be OK, but then leccy system may be bad in the car, like BAD EARTHS somewhere, and it only needs ONE bad earth to bring the lot down.

Another thing is to test the battery acid using a hydrometer.

Or, take the tops off the cells, wear goggles, and look down into the cells when someone tries the starter. If any one or more celss bubbles on this test (like it boils up) that cell, and the battery, and jiggered.

Surely after an 18 hour charge with the battery out of the car, when I connected it back up a ba earth wouldnt drain it in less than 5 minutes would it?...... got a decent price from craddocks for a new one £53.00

couldnt get there to pick it up today as there is a small problem with my car ;)
picking it up 1st thing in the morning.

Not sure if this helps BUT i have just gone down the same road with my disco. Spent 7 hours getting it up and running and the problem was the valves not closing proper. When you take the head off and refit it the gap between the rocker and valve changes. I then set them up again and it started first click so if i was you i would get the rocker box top off and set them again before you go any further. It took 20 mins to do and solved the problem.

Hope this helps

Hi John,

Actually when I put the rocker box cover back I had a quick look at the position of the valves and I thought at the time there was not much of a gap.
Is it as simple as setting using feeling gauges? if so what thickness should I be aiming for? or a brief instruction please :)

Another superb member of this great site willing to help someone out.
Thanks allot John, will be giving it a go tomorrow once the battery is fitted.

Before you do, get some diesel up to the injectors or it won't matter a monkeys what is happening with the valves.

right, here we go again hahaha, new battery fitted, using lift pump got diesel through the filter, made sure there is diesel going to the injection pump, turn her over and un did each injector at the top and made sure ther was diesel coming through and tightened them back up...... will it start...... nope! took Discomanias advice and made sure I had diesel at the injectors prior to doing anything with the valve clearance, what next? should I now reset the valve clearances?....

She has started!!!!!!! YESSS!!!
Decided to rule out the last thing I hadnt tried and took off the battery, and cleaned and redid the earth connection behind the battery, tightened it all back up and refitted the battery, she started al most first turn!!!! YES !!
She sounds abit lumpy and some white smoke out of the zorst but I wil leave her running for 10 mins then do the valve hopefully this will solve the problem.
Keep you posted. thanks for everyones help
