Hi Guys
I'm new to this forum but have found it helpful so far.
Have just acquired my first Td5 Discovery and absolutely love it! The Td5 came with a 12 month MOT which had a few minor points on, one reads chassis showing signs of rust but no holes. After reading some posts on here, I am debating whether to get the under side of the Disco waxoyled or sealed. Is this a job that could be undertaken by a novice or should I leave it and pay the garage to do it? After purchase and taxing, funds are limited so every penny saved is a bonus. Have access to my uncle's pit and could convince dad and said uncle to help out but have no lifting equipment (unless my uncle has got something lurking in his garage that my aunty is unaware of him spending money on !!)
What's the best stuff to use and is it worth waiting until worst of winter is over?
Help much appreciated.
Regards

prep is the big job here. Removing all the crap and making sure it is dry before sealing. Not a hard job to do especially if you have a pit just bloody messy

If I prepare myself for the worst then - hat, goggles, overalls and old trainers I should be OK. I can be quite thorough when I put my mind to it. If I spend all day (or most of the day) on it I'm sure it will pay off divendends in the long run and my time is cheaper than a mechanics!! What's the best product to use? Halfords have loads of stuff on the shelf and I wasn't sure which to choose.
Many thanks.

With waxoyl, when it comes to welding, it makes everything a pain in the arse, it all needs to be stripped before welding otherwise you end up with your car in flames. If you already have rust this wont stop it getting worse, if anything it can trap the moisture thats already present in the porus metal.

Another alternative to waxoyl is Schutz, I personally prefer it as it protects against stone chipping and the like, it cant go onto bare metal tho so any rust you have will need to be treated and painted first (a single coat acrylic will be fine). This offers better protection in the long run IMHO although it is one of these turbo vs supercharger, disco vs defender, chalk vs cheese arguments...

Thanks both. Will look further into it. Will have to do something as I don't want to see it get to the stage of corrosion and welding if a little elbow grease and a few hours of time will save me £££s in the long run. Much appreciated.

Surely rust isn't an issue in Dubai? You could spray the waxoyle into your chassis to protect it, they wouldn't be able to see that.

Anyway, back to the original post, the insides of the chassis are the most important bits to cover to be honest, you need to try and clear out as much rubbish as you can then spray in Kurust to convert all the rust. Let that all dry properly then blast in schutz.

When I come to do my Disco I need to do a few small repairs to the chassis so I am going to cutout the whole rotten section so I can use that as a cleaning access panel, then I'll scrape all the rust out, spray in Kurust then weld it all before blasting in waxoyle.

Cheers for the tips guys. I popped into the garage yesterday evening for my trusty mechanic to look at. He said the chassis and underneath isn't too bad but the Disco has only done 77k on a 51 plate so pretty lucky really. I'll leave it go until the end of this winter and get it all done over the summer ready for next winter. Must remember to do inside & out.

we had a 53 reg td5 disco in my work today for some tyres and i always have a browse around them like you do lol. and the chassi was in a right old mess, serious surface rust and very very flaky. all the brake calipers were rusty aswell so im thinking this was a flood damaged vehicle from back in 2007. chassi on my disco is really good and so is all underneath and its an 02 plate, for a 53 plate to be VERY rusty underneath it must have been in water for a while. all coil springs were rusty, calipers, suspension were also very rusty. i was shocked to be honest

My advise for what it is worth is to wait for a nice dry spell so the chassis is nice and moisture free get it over the pit and brush of the loose dirt and flacky rust dont worry about getting it squeaky clean them coat the chassis brake line ace pipes etc. with external gear and wire rope grease it is as you might imagine a thick non running grease designed to protect machinery out in the elements the best one is sold by ambersil and it comes in aerosol cans you will need five to cover everthing well it soaks in to any remaning dust dirt etc. and makes for a great coating just touch up the heavily eroded areas now and then been doing to mine for many years and chassis is still bright underneath should the worst happen and repairs are required it will come off with thinners highly reccommended.

Grrr I hate td5 chassis! I have seen some so flaky and horrible I immediately want to set about lifting the body so I could repair it properly! Either that or get the underside blasted and drive the car through a vat of waxoil!

Not really a useful post, I just wanted to voice my feelings! :D

I know we all say landrovers rust well (and they do) but it is far from being a LR only thing, we now fail so many 2000-2005 cars on rust its unbelievable, we have had 04 307's with the sills rusted out, KA's that just fall apart, MX-5s that rot out rear suspension mounts and mercs, **** me they rust for fun they do!!!

Mind you I do live and work by the coast so rust is a very common thing around here...

yeah the coastal thing is a major factor, but youre right there are still some everyday rotters out there.

MX5, mercs and fords i already knew, but 307s? didnt expect that. for the best though, they deserve to be crushed!
