Chassis number query

I have recently joined and introduced myself in the new members area. As I mentioned there, I have recently purchased a 1995 Discovery V8i ES auto from Japan. I am waiting for it to be shipped to Durban before importing it into Zambia. The chassis number they have given me is SALLJR-MM3TA165617. I have found a chart explaining the different letters and numbers in the chassis number and have found some discrepancies. The sixth letter should denote the wheelbase, which on a Discovery is 100", and therefore (according to the chart I have) should be a G for 100" or an A for 100" Japanese spec. Mine is an R, which according to my chart is a Defender 110" with 24 volt electrics!!

Is it possible that the R could also have been used to denote a Japanese spec Discovery or is the chassis number I have been given incorrect?? Can anyone help me in this regard?

No. I think there is a typo. Get a copy of the Japanese de-registration paper for sure. (we import to NZ from Japan so we know wot we are doing). Did you get it at auction? If so, get the agent to email you a snap of the plate under the bonnet.

that number looks incorrect, it should be SALLJAMM3TA165617, no dash between A & M and A is jap spec, it's possible that whoever gave you the number has written it wrong, I suppose R and A could be mistaken!

Hi, We have found that A is just a version. Not neccesarliry Japan.

Thanks for the replies. I will ask them to check the chassis number and to send a copy of the de-registration papers.

The company has assured me that the chassis number supplied is correct and as it appears on the ownership documents! No proof yet, the only thing they can supply at the moment is a copy of the export certificate, which I am still waiting for. They are unable to supply a photo of the vehicle identification plate, as they do not have one and there is too great a backlog of work for them to take one! Looks like I may have to wait to see the vehicle to check the chassis number!!

I have a 3.9v8 Disco in with SRS faults,its Vin is SALLJRMM3VA******. It was grey imported from Japan to the UK.So Commander Keen,your Vin is proberly rite.

Thanks for the reply. The registration papers confirm that the chassis number given is correct. Just seemed strange to me.
