Hi all. I had a 2001 Freelander about 10 years ago which, after many years of faultless family service, was sadly wrecked by an inconvenient motorcycle soon after it became mine.
I have returned with a Freelander 2 2007 2.2 GS in a fetching silver. It's got a great MOT history but has been run on a bit of a budget for the last couple of years and hasn't been serviced since a 'B' one in mid 2019 at 93000 miles. Prior to that, the service history is decent. Cambelt and water pump changed at 89000 and it has 129000 on the clock now.
It seems OK, doesn't have much in the way of optional extras but is clean, tidy and hopefully solid. There's a bit of a clatter from the engine when cold and the tyres are matched in pairs but not as a set of 4. That seems to be it, a bit of intervention now and hopefully it'll last a good while. I am a bit concerned that the Haldex etc hasn't been inspected for 4 years but I'll have a read up on here and have a crack at it. Would that be the most important job to get on top of, aside from engine oil and brake fluid changes?

I'm always cautious of these vehicles maintained on a budget, as they won't survive long with poor maintenance.
The engine shouldn't clatter at all, so it could well have been serviced with the wrong oil, so do an oil change with the correct oil and see if it makes a difference. Unfortunately using the wrong oil or not changing the oil on time causes valve stem and rocker wear, which isn't easy to fix without a top end rebuild. Hopefully it's just the oil has died.

The Haldex needs regular fluid and filter changes if it's going to live a long life. However LR decided to give it a 150k or 10 year service interval, which is way too long. The fluid and filter really needs changing at 30k or 3 years if a long life is to be expected.
All drive line fluids need to be done at the same 30k intervals.
Brake fluid is again a 3 year change, but nobody does it.
On a 15 year old FL2, I'd replaced the rotors, calipers, pads and full parking brake assemblies, as they'll all be on the way out now, unless they've already been replaced.

Thanks Nodge, I'll change the oil as a priority. It'll have a 'B' service asap to start with and I've been reassured that the clattering when cold is more my imagination than an actual issue so hopefully all is well.

A few years ago I was sure there was a horrible sound that sounded very terminal from my motor. Not overly loud, but very ominous.

My family couldn't hear anything, but what would they know about engine sounds. o_O

I took it to a couple of garages, they were looking at me like I was fookin mad.

Anyway, against his better judgement, I persuaded 1 of them to change the cambelt.

Feeling vindicated, it got rid of the sound... but replaced with a much worse one, that similarly, nobody else could hear!
