Yeah, and measured from the alternator it gives constant 14.4v alternator positive and grounded at inlet manifold.
OK, 2 things. Do you still get 14.4V at the alternator if you use the battery ground?

Are you saying you are seeing 14.4V at the alternator and only around 13V at the battery at the same time? If so, you are loosing about 1.5V in a piece of wire/connection/fuse somewhere which is wrong, you should see almost exactly the same at the battery as at the alternator, for example, if you measured 14.4V at the alternator you shouldn't see less than about 14.3V at the battery. But keep the ground connection on the same place, ideally the battery, for the 2 measurements.

Can't help with Defender wiring, I only know the Disco 2, so can't give an idea of which wires of fuse links to trace.
