Changing wiper motor..is it hard?

my original ‘76 motor has given up, I reckon I can replace it myself, but I wondered if there are any pitfalls? .....

before you buy another motor, consider swapping the brushes in it:

non genuine brushes are cheaper.

As for getting the motor out, the screws holding the dash board cover box will be rusted, they will round off, the edge of the cover will also be rusty and crumble before re assembly!

Once you have the outer cover off the motor itself is only held to the bulkhead by one bolt through a clamp, before you undo it free off the big nut that holds the wire drive outer to the motor. Then you have to turn the unit around and remove the rear cover plate [ small bolts ] to release the drive wire. Give the earth point on the bulkhead a good clean before refitting.

Ah excellent, so,I can leave the wire drive in situ and literally replace just the motor? That’s what I was wondering about

They are usuallly just dry and need oiling. The motor bushes are oilite to you soak them in a pan of hot oil then let it cool to suck the oil in.

It’s a Lucas motor, and I read somewhere they’re pretty indestructible. I’ll disconnect it all and see. Quite optimistic now !

These are easy to get going, but, take your time as its easy to damage the brushes, and be very carefull with the wiring and park switch, get anything wrong and its a dead short.

They are tough, when mine stopped working I found the motor can half full of rusty dirty water. After a good clean up and dry out and oiling it worked on for many more years. Must have got in when I got in some deep water some months before.
You know you are in deep when you have to stand hunched over in the cab to save getting your arse wet.

It’s weird this, but the motor is a Lucas one and I can’t undo the back panel to get the wire drive out as it’s completely sealed, no screws. So, looks like I might have to take the whole wire drive out and replace it along with a new motor, question is, do I have to take the dash top off ? Not looking forward to that....

take the wiper arms off and rack will pull out

Ok, ideal! I take it the new one just gets pushed up where the old one came out ?

as you push the cable back into the tube you may have to turn the wheelbox spline to help it to go through

I was wondering that. Thanks a lot ! All the years I’ve had series and this is the first time I’ve had any windscreen wiper issues.

well i managed to take the motor to bits...turns out a wee bit of the shim on the gear wheel had snapped off and was jammed against the motor spindle. wired up the motor without the gear and its going great. New gear wheel ordered for a princely 7 quid !
