Changing the Auto cooling hoses - any special tools needed?

Just checking if i need any special tools to change the hoses on the auto box cooling hoses and any other work i should do - changing the gear boax oil and removing the intercooler.

and is it really 9.5 ltrs of transmission fluid to change the oil?

Need to know as car currently 200 miles away and can't just nip out to see.

Hi Rob

1. Autobox oil - the total is about 10ltrs but you'll only get out about 5ltrs at most - the rest stays in the torque converter. Use Dexron III or fully synth.

2. You'll need an open-ended 19mm spanner for tightening the pipes to the gearbox casing. If you can find/make a spanner which is slightly bent - perhaps 20-30° - it will help.

3. Need a Torx T50 bit or Hex bit for the fill/level plug and a surprisingly small hex bit for the sump plug.

4. Something to get the new oil in - I use a 500ml syringe.

Can't think of any other bits you'll need, but are you familiar with the correct refill procedure?
 
well - the story is that the pipe went at a set of traffic lights so quite a bit of oil ended up on in mansfield.

after replacing the pipes i was just going to top it up.

any info would be recieved gratefully

Ok mate, the procedure for correctly refilling the auto box is as follows:

1. Identify and remove the level fill plug on the front of the gearbox;

2. Assuming you emptied the oil out of the box to do the pipes - now put it oil in, until it starts to come out of the hole (about 2ltrs), then

3. Start the engine, cycle through all gearbox positions, resting in each one for a couple of seconds to allow the box to take up drive, then

4. get back underneath and continue to top up the box until it starts to run out again (about 2.5ltrs) then the 'box is properly refilled. Now replace the level/fill plug and you're done :D:D:D
 
Don't want to opens can of worms but would anyone recommend changing oil in autobox?I know nothing of history of mine so was thinking of putting some fresh stuff in..

Definitely Graham, I do mine every 20,000kms. The more interesting question is, should you change the filter? Opinions are more divided on this one.

Nice one cheers mate. Last time I looked couldn't find a filler plug so assumed it would be a fill through dipstick tube job but will check again

Graham, when you get underneath, look for the forward end of the gearbox, you will see 2 metal oil pipes (about 0.5inch diam) looping under the front of the box. Just above them is the fill/level plug.
