Bought a 08 plate defender 110 station wagon last year and have just renewed tax disc. horrified to see it was £490 as a diesel car. Spoke to DVLA and they say I cannot change tax class from diesel car (as first registered) to commercial (i.e. to save about £270!). I am a landscape gardener / tree surgeon so my Land rover is commercial - it is all livered up and contains my small tools. Anyone had this issue before and been able to successfully change or am I faced with the grim fact that our lovely business friendly government are going to screw me more?! thanks

what Nigel said, plus, that's based on how it left the factory, so even if you put a hard top with no windows on the back, it won't change it's registration class.

have the opposite problem around london, everyone wants the station wagon version so they don't have to pay low emission zone charge.

to be honest, you seem to have either not thought things through,
or want the best of both worlds in the choice of your chosen transport.

like the OP said,a 7 seater/ plus are just fine for londons inner LEZ,
thus command a higher premium on sales, but its down to the user as to whether he drives it with seats folded down creating a quite large loadspace, or leaves the seats up as intended.
but the same vehicle made as a comercial variant will get clobbered for a very expensive Low Emmision Zone charge.
Its the same sort of thing your asking really, you have a many seated station wagon, but you want to be treated as a business classed comercial.

afraid the 2 & 2 just dont add up to 4
(or 7 + 3 is 10 or whatever..)

you have to factor in the added costs of your "car" tax,
or sell your "car"
and by a comercial, but it then lacks being a many seated transport vehicle.

Go buy a 7 seater discovery,
It`ll do both,
mine carries lots, either seated, or in boxes & bags ;)
