I am looking for a series 2/3 tax exempt chassis/project, I have been offered a couple but the v5 says plg not historic vehicle, i've been told once the project is mot'd the v5 can be changed when taxed at the dvla office? I dont want to pay extra cash for a tax exempt project only to find I have to pay road tax, any links that can verify they will or wont change the v5,

To become a historic vehicle the vehical needs to be manufactured (not registerd) before 7th of January 1973 to prove this you will need a letter from a reconised motor orginisation like Heritage Motor Centre anything after that you will have to pay the tax. This all of course depends on how much you have changed the vehicle specifcations from the manufactured ie the points system and posabily q plate reg etc...

To change the taxation class to historic from PLG you need to present the original v5,MOT,insurance cert etc at your local Vehicle taxation office, they will change it for you and give you a new tax disc.
This only applies to vehicles which meet the criteria for tax exempt status.I found out this recently as I bought a 72 sIII which has been off the road for years but not sorned etc.The nice lady at the DVLA told me to send in the V5 to get it transferred to my name. Then when its roadworthy with a new MOT,take all the Docs to the local place and they will do it.But you cant just change the taxation class with a change of ownership.

Another point is that the nice lady at the DVLA said that SORN came into use on 31 Jan 1998,so if a car was untaxed at that point you dont need to sorn it.So my log book came back PLG and looking on the DVLA website its shown as unliecenced - not SORN.The need to SORN will only come after I've taxed it again - and changed to Historic.
